Chapter 5 - Ian’s Return
The hardest call I had to make was the one to my brother, Ian.
Ian had been undergoing intensive, inpatient physical and psychological rehabilitation at a secluded recovery facility three states away following a catastrophic highway accident that had nearly cost him his life. For over a year, my parents had acted as the gatekeepers of communication, telling Ian that Lizzy was thriving under their care, while simultaneously telling Lizzy that her father had abandoned her because he was sick.
When Ian picked up the phone on the third ring, his voice sounded raspy and tired.
“Natalie? Is everything okay? It’s the middle of the afternoon.”
I swallowed hard, struggling to find the right words to shatter his world without destroying him completely.
“Ian... you need to sit down,” I said, my voice trembling.
“What is it? Is it Lizzy?”
“Lizzy is safe with me right now,” I began, careful and steady. “She’s at my house. But Ian... Mom and Dad haven’t been taking care of her. They lied to you. They lied to all of us.”
Silence stretched across the phone line—a heavy, suffocating stillness.
“What do you mean?” Ian whispered, the panic rising in his tone.
“They locked her in a storage closet for days at a time. They pocketed her care checks, starved her, and worked with a county official to cover up the audits.”
A sharp, jagged cry broke from Ian’s throat—a sound of pure, unadulterated anguish that echoed through the phone speaker.
“I’m coming home,” Ian choked out, his voice suddenly hard as steel. “I’m checking out of this facility today. If those monsters touched my little girl—”

“Ian, listen to me,” I interrupted firmly. “The police have them in custody. Marcus Vance is arrested. The state prosecutors are building an airtight felony case. You don’t need to do anything reckless. Just focus on getting here safely. Lizzy needs her dad, but she needs you healthy.”
“I’m leaving right now,” Ian said, his voice cold and resolute. “I’ll be there in twenty-four hours.”
