Chapter 3 - The Crossfire in Terminal B

The shift from ambient airport murmur to lethal chaos happened in less than three seconds.

Frederick’s world narrowed down to absolute tactical geometry. The two syndicate enforcers—professionals sent by the Chicago buyers to punish him for blowing the multi-million-dollar crypto transaction—had spotted him standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows. But worse, they had accidentally intersected with Elena and Kylie’s rushing path toward Gate B6.

One of the enforcers, a burly man with a jagged scar across his left cheek, shoved a businessman aside to clear his line of sight, accidentally knocking Elena’s canvas tote bag to the floor. Manuscripts, pens, and a half-eaten bag of pretzels spilled across the slick linoleum floor.

"Watch it, lady!" the enforcer growled, reaching past her while keeping his hand locked on the suppressed firearm beneath his jacket.

Kylie let out a sharp cry of fright, burying her face in Elena’s neck.

Elena dropped to her knees, scrambling to gather her papers, completely unaware that she was kneeling inches away from a calibrated crossfire. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry—"

"Elena, get down!" Frederick’s voice wasn't a request; it was a thunderclap that cut through the terminal noise.

In the fraction of a second it took for Elena to look up, Frederick was already moving. He crossed the intervening twenty feet of open terminal floor with explosive speed, his left hand clearing his jacket to draw the SIG Sauer P226 while his right hand swept out, grabbing the back of Elena’s collar and hauling her and Kylie bodily behind a massive structural concrete pillar just as the first suppressed round shattered the glass of a nearby advertising display.

Pop. Pop.

Panic erupted instantly. The polite hum of Terminal B dissolved into screams, the sound of rolling luggage tipping over, and hundreds of terrified travelers stampeding toward the emergency exits.

"Stay down!" Frederick ordered, pressing Elena and the trembling child flat against the base of the concrete pillar.

"What is happening?!" Elena gasped, her face pale, the intellectual detachment completely gone, replaced by the primal terror of a mother protecting her child. "Who are those men?!"

"People who want a conversation I'm not interested in having," Frederick replied coldly, his breathing steady and controlled, the adrenaline only sharpening his focus.

He peered around the edge of the concrete. The two enforcers were advancing, utilizing the sea of panicked travelers as human shields, trying to flank the pillar. They thought they had cornered a solitary target. They didn't know that Marco and the rest of Frederick’s tactical security detail were already converging from the upper mezzanine.

Crack.

From the balcony above, a single, precise shot from Marco’s sniper rifle punched through the terminal’s acoustic ceiling tiles, impacting the floor two inches in front of the leading enforcer’s boot.

“Drop your weapons! Federal—local security! Drop them now!” Marco’s amplified voice bellowed from the overhead PA speakers, utilizing the airport’s emergency override code.

The two enforcers realized in an instant that they were outmatched and outpositioned. Cursing in Italian, they spun around, dropping their weapons into a nearby trash receptacle, and sprinted back toward the arrivals exit, blending into the human tide of fleeing passengers.

Silence—of a heavy, ringing variety—settled over the terminal sector.

Frederick slowly lowered his pistol, engaging the safety with a soft click, and holstered it beneath his suit jacket. He turned back to the pillar where Elena was huddled, her arms wrapped around Kylie so tightly the little girl was whimpering.

"Are you hurt?" Frederick asked, his voice unexpectedly gentle as he knelt down beside them.

Elena looked up at him, her hazel eyes wide, shimmering with unshed tears of shock. She looked from Frederick’s calm, unbothered face down to the heavy bulge of the shoulder holster beneath his arm, and then back to his eyes. The realization hit her like a physical blow.

"You're... you're not just a businessman," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Who are you?"

"My name is Frederick," he said, offering no aliases, no corporate titles, no lies.

"Mommy, can we still go to San Francisco?" Kylie asked quietly from the safety of her mother's arms, oblivious to the bullets that had just missed them by inches.

Elena took a ragged, deep breath, struggling to pull her scattered wits together. She looked at Frederick—this terrifying, lethal stranger who had just put his own body between assassins and her child.

"Our flight," Elena managed to say, her voice shaking slightly as she pointed toward the now-deserted Gate B6. "It... it probably left."

Frederick stood up, offering his large, calloused hand to help her to her feet. "Your flight isn't leaving, Elena. In fact, you're not flying commercial today at all."
