Chapter 10 - The Second Chance

Frederick sprinted up the grand staircase, ignoring Claire’s confused calls behind him, and pushed open the door to the guest suite.
The room was empty. The bed was made. The only trace that Elena and Kylie had ever been there was a small, handwritten sticky note left on the mahogany nightstand.
Frederick snatched the note up. Written in neat, hurried handwriting were a few simple sentences:
“Thank you for saving us, Frederick. Go back to your family. Some stories are meant to be put back on the shelf, even if they were the best ones we ever wrote. - E.”
"No," Frederick muttered, crushing the note in his fist.
He turned around and bolted back down the stairs. Claire was standing in the foyer, looking bewildered.
"Fred, what's going on? Who was that woman?" Claire asked.
"Claire... I'm so glad you're alive. I will provide for you, I will protect you, I will ensure you have everything you need for the rest of your life," Frederick said rapidly, his voice urgent and resolute. "But the woman who just left this house... she didn't just save my life. She woke me up from a five-year nightmare. I love her."
Claire stared at him for a long moment. She saw the absolute, unyielding conviction in his eyes—a conviction she had never seen before the tragedy five years ago. Slowly, a sad, understanding smile touched her lips.
"Go," Claire whispered. "Go get her, Fred. You spent five years mourning a ghost. Don't spend another minute letting a real life walk away."
Frederick didn't hesitate. He grabbed his car keys off the entry table and ran out the front door, jumping into his armored SUV.
He didn't know where Elena was going. But he knew the airports, the bus stations, the train lines. And more importantly, he knew her mind.
Forty-five minutes later, his tires screeched to a halt outside the crowded entrance of the San Francisco Greyhound terminal. Frederick leaped out of the SUV, scanning the chaotic crowd of travelers carrying duffel bags and cardboard boxes.
And there she was.
Standing near Platform 4, wearing her faded denim jacket, holding Kylie’s small hand while balancing a canvas tote bag overflowing with manuscripts, Elena was staring up at the departure board.
"Elena!"
His deep voice cut through the terminal noise.
Elena froze. She slowly turned around.
Frederick pushed through the crowd until he stood directly in front of her, breathing heavily, his eyes locked onto hers with desperate intensity.
"You left your manuscript behind," Frederick said, holding out a small, forgotten notebook he had snatched off the guest room desk.
Elena stared at the notebook, her eyes shimmering with tears. "Frederick... your wife came back. You have your family together again. I don't belong in that picture."
"Claire is alive, and I will always care for her," Frederick said, stepping closer, closing the distance between them until he could feel the warmth of her breath. "But she belongs to a life I buried five years ago. You belong to right now. You belong to me."
He reached out, taking her hand, intertwining his fingers with hers.
"Stay," Frederick whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "Help me build a home, not a fortress. Write our story together."
Kylie looked up at them, tugging on Elena's jacket. "Mommy, does this mean we get to stay in the castle with the nice man and the puppy?"

Elena let out a wet, beautiful laugh, wiping a tear from her cheek as she looked into Frederick's eyes and finally let her walls fall all the way down.
"Yeah, bug," Elena whispered, smiling up at the mafia boss who had finally found his way home. "We're staying."
