Chapter 9 - Ghosts of the Past

The heavy iron gates of the Pacific Heights safehouse swung inward.

The young woman walked slowly up the stone pathway, her footsteps echoing in the quiet morning air. As she reached the front porch, the oak door swung open, and Frederick stood framed in the doorway, staring at her as if he were looking at a phantom rising from the grave.

"Claire?" Frederick whispered, the name tearing itself out of his chest like a physical wound.

The woman’s eyes filled with tears, a bittersweet smile trembling on her lips. "Hello, Fred. It's been a long five years."

Behind him, Elena stepped into the hallway, freezing in place as she saw the woman standing on the porch. The resemblance was striking, but more than that—the realization hit Elena instantly.

This was Claire. Frederick’s wife. The woman whose presumed death had turned him into a cold, walled-off syndicate boss. The woman whose memory he had protected like a sacred shrine for half a decade.

"You're... you're supposed to be dead," Frederick breathed, closing the distance between them, his hands hovering over her shoulders as if afraid she would dissolve into mist if he touched her too hard. "The police... the hospital records... the car bomb in Chicago..."

"It was staged," Claire explained, her voice choked with emotion as she stepped inside and let Frederick pull her into a desperate, sobbing embrace. "The rival families put a hit out on our family, Fred. To keep you and Sophia safe, my father’s network faked my death and smuggled me overseas under deep cover. I wasn't allowed to contact you. If I had, they would have tracked the communication straight to your doorstep."

Elena stood quietly in the background, a sudden, cold wave of grief and reality washing over her. The fairy tale was over. The man who had saved her, the man she had fallen in love with over the span of three insane days, belonged to a ghost who had just come back to life.

She quietly backed away toward the kitchen, her heart breaking in absolute silence.

"Mommy, where are we going?" Kylie whispered, tugging on Elena’s sleeve, sensing the heavy, suffocating shift in the air.

"We're going home, sweetie," Elena said, blinking back the hot tears stinging her eyes as she quickly began gathering their bags from the guest room. "Pack your crayons. Our trip is finished."

Downstairs, after the initial shock and overwhelming tears of reunion began to settle, Frederick pulled back from Claire, his mind racing through a thousand conflicting emotions. He loved Claire—she was the mother of his child, his first love. But as he looked into her eyes, he realized something profound: the man she left behind five years ago no longer existed. The grief had changed him. And in the span of three days, a writer with a canvas bag and a little girl in purple sneakers had carved out a permanent home inside his heart.

"Where is Sophia?" Claire asked anxiously, looking around the grand foyer. "Is she safe? Can I see my baby?"

"She's at the academy," Frederick said softly. Then, looking around the hallway, he noticed something missing. "Where is Elena?"
