Chapter 5 - The Broken Sister

That afternoon, Victoria arrived at Austin General Hospital.

She was flanked by two massive private security guards. She walked with perfect, terrifying composure down the sterile white hallways until she reached the intensive care unit.

Chloe Vance lay in a hospital bed, hooked up to a terrifying array of monitors and IV drips. Both of her legs were encased in heavy casts, and a massive metal halo brace kept her neck entirely immobile.

When Chloe saw Victoria walk into the room, her eyes filled with tears of pure terror and shame.

“Victoria...” Chloe croaked, her voice dry and raspy. “Please... don't yell at me. I’m in so much pain.”

Victoria didn't yell. She pulled up a chair, sitting carefully beside the bed. She looked at the young woman who, just twenty-four hours ago, had been laughing in designer clothes, mocking Victoria’s pregnancy weight.

“I’m not here to yell, Chloe,” Victoria said softly. “I’m here to show you the truth.”

Victoria pulled out her iPad and played the video of the aftermath of the fall.

Chloe’s tear-filled eyes widened as she watched the screen. She watched herself screaming in agony, begging for help. And then she watched her mother and her beloved older brother completely ignore her cries, focusing entirely on wiping the grease off the stairs to protect their own skins.

“Shut up, Chloe, just wait a second!” Julian’s voice echoed from the iPad speaker.

A guttural, heartbroken sob tore from Chloe’s throat.

“They... they didn't even check to see if I was alive,” Chloe wept, her face contorting in agony. “They just cared about the money. They let me lie there like a dog.”

“Your mother greased those stairs to kill me and my baby,” Victoria said, her voice devoid of pity. “And your brother knew about it. He wanted me dead so he could collect the insurance money and inherit my company. But you took the fall instead.”

Chloe closed her eyes, the devastation complete. The illusion of her loving, superior family had been shattered into a million pieces.

“The doctors say I have severe spinal compression,” Chloe whispered. “I need three more surgeries. I might walk with a cane for the rest of my life. And Julian... Julian canceled my health insurance last month to save money for his discretionary fund. I have nothing, Victoria. I have no money to pay for this.”

Victoria sat back, crossing her arms.

“I will pay for your surgeries, Chloe,” Victoria stated. “I will pay for your physical therapy, and I will set up a modest monthly stipend so you don't starve on the streets when you leave this hospital.”

Chloe’s eyes snapped open in absolute shock. “Why? Why would you do that for me? After everything I said about you?”

“Because I want something in return,” Victoria leaned in, her eyes hardening into obsidian. “I know Julian has been hiding money from my company. I know he’s been skimming profits to fund a secret life. You’re his confidante, Chloe. You know where it is. Give me everything.”

Chloe didn't hesitate for a single second. The betrayal of her family had burned away any remaining loyalty.

“There’s a safety deposit box at the First National Bank downtown,” Chloe spat out, venom lacing her weak voice. “It’s under a shell LLC. He has offshore ledgers in there. And Victoria... there’s something else.”

“What?”

“He has a mistress. Her name is Amber. She’s his 22-year-old executive assistant. He promised her that once you ‘had your tragic accident,’ they were moving to Aspen together.”

Victoria felt a cold, dark laugh bubble up in her chest.

“Amber,” Victoria murmured. “How terribly cliché.”
