Chapter 7 - The Bail Hearing

The Travis County Courthouse was packed to capacity. The Austin media had caught wind of the scandal: a prominent socialite, a greased staircase, a pregnant wife, and a secret mistress. It was the trial of the decade.

Julian and Eleanor were led into the courtroom in handcuffs and bright orange jumpsuits.

Julian looked like a broken man. He had lost ten pounds in three days. His perfectly styled hair was greasy and flat. Eleanor looked completely manic, muttering to herself and glaring at anyone who looked her way.

Victoria sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by her private security. She wore a stunning, tailored maternity suit in deep navy blue. She looked like a sovereign, radiating power and untouched grace.

When Julian saw her, he mouthed the words, “Please, Victoria. I’m sorry.”

Victoria didn't even blink. She simply turned her head and looked straight ahead.

The judge slammed his gavel.

“We are here to determine bail for Julian Vance and Eleanor Vance,” the judge announced. “The charges are severe. The prosecution has the floor.”

The District Attorney stood up. “Your Honor, we argue for the total denial of bail. These defendants present a profound flight risk and are a direct, proven danger to the victim, Victoria Vance, and her unborn child.”

Julian’s public defender—since Victoria had frozen his assets, he couldn't afford a private attorney—stood up quickly.

“Your Honor, my client Julian Vance was merely asleep during this incident! The video only shows him cleaning up a spill in a panic to protect his mother. He had no prior knowledge of Eleanor’s actions! He is innocent of conspiracy!”

“Is that so?” the District Attorney countered smoothly. “The prosecution calls Miss Amber Lewis to the stand.”

Julian’s head whipped around. When he saw his young, beautiful mistress walking down the aisle, his eyes lit up with desperate hope. He thought she was there to support him.

Instead, Amber walked straight to the witness box, swore on the Bible, and completely annihilated him.

Under oath, Amber testified to everything. She detailed Julian’s obsession with Victoria’s wealth. She admitted to seeing the $1.5 million life insurance policy a month prior. And then, she delivered the killing blow.

“On Tuesday night, Julian texted me,” Amber said into the microphone, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. “He said, ‘My mother is taking care of the problem tonight. By the weekend, the pregnant cow will be gone, and we’ll be drinking champagne in Aspen.’”

The courtroom erupted into a deafening roar of gasps and murmurs.

Eleanor let out a blood-curdling screech and lunged at her own son!

“You idiot!” Eleanor screamed, her hands wrapping around Julian’s throat before the bailiffs could pull them apart. “You left a text message?! You ruined us! I did this for you, you ungrateful brat!”

“Get off me, you crazy old bat!” Julian yelled, fighting back wildly. “This was your idea! You bought the grease!”

“Order! Order in this court!” the judge roared, slamming his gavel repeatedly as five bailiffs wrestled the mother and son to the floor, pinning them against the hardwood.

Victoria sat in the front row, watching her enemies tear each other to pieces.

She rested a gentle hand on her stomach. Look closely, little one, she thought. This is what happens to monsters when you drag them into the light.
