Chapter 8 - The Verdict and The Birth

Three months later.

The criminal trial of Julian and Eleanor Vance was swift, brutal, and entirely one-sided.

Faced with 4K video evidence, financial embezzlement records, the testimony of a scorned mistress, and the damning statements of a paralyzed sister, the defense crumbled completely.

Julian, in a desperate bid to save himself, tried to testify against his mother, claiming Eleanor had masterminded the entire plot. Eleanor retaliated by taking the stand and explicitly detailing how Julian had forged Victoria’s signature on the life insurance documents.

They dug their own graves, tossing dirt on each other until they were both completely buried.

On the final day of the trial, Victoria was sitting in the gallery when she felt a sharp, sudden tightening in her lower abdomen.

Her water had just broken.

She calmly leaned over to her attorney, Marcus. “It’s time. Get the car.”

Victoria didn't scream or panic. She stood up gracefully, walked out of the courtroom with her security detail, and was driven directly to the private VIP wing of Austin Medical Center.

While Victoria was lying in a plush, sunlit delivery room, breathing through her contractions with absolute focus, the jury foreman back at the courthouse stood up to read the verdict.

“On the charge of Conspiracy to Commit First-Degree Murder, we find the defendant, Eleanor Vance... Guilty.”

“On the charge of Conspiracy to Commit First-Degree Murder, Insurance Fraud, and Embezzlement, we find the defendant, Julian Vance... Guilty.”

As the judge handed down two consecutive sentences of forty years in maximum-security federal prison without the possibility of early parole, Julian collapsed to the floor of the courtroom, sobbing uncontrollably, begging for a wife who wasn't there.

Miles away, in the quiet serenity of the hospital room, Victoria gave one final, powerful push.

The bright, piercing cry of a healthy baby boy filled the room.

The nurses placed the warm, perfect child onto Victoria’s chest. He had a full head of dark hair and bright, observant eyes.

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy streamed down Victoria’s face. She kissed the top of her son’s head, inhaling the sweet scent of new life.

“Welcome to the world, Arthur,” Victoria whispered, naming him after her late father—the man who had built the empire she now protected. “You are safe, my love. Mommy took care of all the monsters. They will never, ever hurt us.”
