Chapter 2 - The Calculated Smile

The hours leading up to the dinner party were a masterclass in psychological warfare. I moved through the house with the practiced grace of a ghost, performing the domestic duties Lara assigned with a hollow, mechanical obedience. Every time she barked an order—polish the silver, iron the linens, ensure the wine is chilled to exactly fifty-five degrees—I bowed my head and whispered, "Yes, Lara."

Internally, I was cataloging every vulnerability. I knew the exact moment the cleaning crew arrived; I knew the frequency at which the security system pinged when a window was opened; and most importantly, I knew the exact timing of the investors' arrival.

As evening descended, I dressed in the high-neck silk gown Brandon had demanded. It was elegant, formal, and—crucially—it hid the bruises on my neck and collarbone. I applied foundation with surgical precision, masking the split in my lip until it looked like nothing more than a minor chapped irritation.

When I emerged, Brandon was waiting at the bottom of the grand staircase. He looked at me, scanning for flaws like a critic inspecting a piece of sub-par merchandise.

"Don't speak," he murmured, his voice low and jagged. "You are there to be seen, not heard. If Mr. Sterling asks a question, you smile, nod, and let me handle the business talk."

"Of course, Brandon," I replied, forcing my voice to remain soft, subservient.

The doorbell chimed at exactly 7:00 p.m. The arrival of Marcus Sterling, the primary investor for the Westview Project, marked the beginning of the final act.
