Chapter 4 - The Infiltration

After the guests departed, the true nature of their fury was unleashed. As soon as the front door clicked shut, the mask of the charming businessman fell from Brandon’s face. He strode toward me, his hand raised.
I didn't flinch. Instead, I stepped back, reaching into my pocket and clicking the voice-activated recorder I had been wearing all evening.
"You think you’re smart, don't you?" he hissed, pinning me against the wall. "You think you can play the martyr in front of our investors? You are nothing without me. You're a liability."
"I am the owner of this company, Brandon," I said, my voice eerily calm. "And I have proof of every dime you’ve siphoned, every forged signature, and the truth about why you really wanted my father gone."
Lara gasped, stepping forward. "She’s lost her mind, Brandon. She's hysterical. We need to call the clinic."
"The police are already on their way," I said, pulling my phone from my pocket. I hadn't been waiting for them to break me; I had been waiting for them to admit their crimes on record.
Brandon reached for my phone, but I was faster. I darted into the study, slamming the heavy oak door and bolting it. I scrambled to the desk, opened the hidden compartment I had spent weeks preparing, and uploaded the files—the real blueprints, the financial ledgers, and the footage from the smoke detector—to a secure, cloud-based server.

Outside, Brandon was throwing his weight against the door. "Open this door, Evelyn! You have no idea what you’ve started!"
"Oh, I know exactly what I've started," I shouted back, my heart pounding with a mixture of terror and exhilaration. "I'm finishing the house."
