Chapter 5 - The Collapse

The police arrived not with sirens, but with the quiet, clinical efficiency that accompanies white-collar crime investigations. As the blue and red lights washed over the front lawn, the reality of the situation finally seemed to dawn on them.
Brandon was calm, trying to lie his way out of it, whispering excuses to the officers. But then, Marcus Sterling walked up the path, accompanied by the lead investigator. He held a tablet, watching the high-definition footage I had sent him an hour ago—the footage of Brandon admitting to the forgery and Lara bragging about the 'takeover.'
"Mr. and Mrs. Miller," the lead officer said, his voice devoid of emotion. "You are under arrest for fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy."
Lara’s face went pale, her expression of imperious cruelty crumbling into a mask of pure, frantic terror. Brandon looked at me, his eyes wide with disbelief, as if he still expected me to step forward and stop them.
I stood in the doorway, the cool night air hitting my face. I wasn't shaking. I wasn't crying. I was simply watching.
As they led them away in handcuffs, Brandon stopped and glared at me, his voice a low, venomous whisper. "You'll be on the street in a month. You can't run this company alone."

"I don't have to run it alone," I said, looking at the house that had once been a cage and was now just a pile of wood and stone. "I have the truth. And that's all the structural support I ever needed."
I watched them drive away, the taillights fading into the darkness. For the first time in two years, the house was silent. And in that silence, I finally felt the foundation of my own life settling into place.
