Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Atlantic Wreck

The atmosphere in the mansion shifted from a celebration of high society into a courtroom of terrifying tension. None of the guests made a move to leave. The drama unfolding before them was larger than any scandal the city had ever seen.

Julian took off his wet black overcoat, handing it to a terrified butler who stood frozen nearby. Beneath the coat, Julian wore an old, perfectly preserved naval uniform adorned with historical family crests.

"Forty years ago," Julian began, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room, "my father, Arthur Sterling, built this family’s fortune on integrity, shipping routes, and honest labor. When he died, he willed the controlling shares of the Sterling Corporation to Clara and me. But Victor... Victor wanted the empire for himself."

Victor stood by the marble fireplace, his knuckles white as he leaned against the mantel. "These are the ramblings of a bitter old man! You have no proof!"

"I have forty years of proof," Julian countered coldly.

Julian looked around the room, meeting the eyes of the prominent judges, politicians, and financiers standing in attendance.

"In the autumn of 1986," Julian continued, "Victor discovered that Clara was pregnant with our child. He knew that an heir would permanently lock him out of the family trust. So, he arranged for me to board the S.S. Meridian for an urgent business trip to London. But hours before we set sail, he hired a technician to compromise the auxiliary boiler valves."

Clara took a step toward the center of the room, holding up the rain-soaked envelope.

"When the ship exploded fifty miles off the coast," Clara said, her voice trembling with intense emotion, "Julian was thrown into the icy sea. A passing fishing vessel pulled his unconscious body from the water, but his memory was shattered by the trauma and the freezing cold. For ten years, he lived in a small coastal village in Nova Scotia, not knowing his own name."

A low murmur swept through the crowd. Women pulled their shawls tighter around their shoulders; men exchanged grim, uneasy looks.

"And while Julian was suffering in exile," Clara’s eyes flamed with righteous anger as she stared at Victor, "you came to my quarters, Victor. You brought forged medical papers. You threatened to destroy my infant son if I did not surrender my golden key and sign over temporary management of the estate."

"You were unhinged!" Victor spat, his face red with rage. "You were grieving and paranoid!"

"I was terrified!" Clara shouted, her voice echoing like a thunderclap off the plaster ceilings. "And when I refused to give you the golden key, you had your thugs break into my home! You took my son from his cradle and gave him away to a corrupt orphanage in Europe, telling me he was dead!"

A collective gasp of utter horror echoed through the room.

David, a thirty-five-year-old high-ranking executive within the Sterling firm who had spent his whole life believing he was an adopted orphan raised by Victor's generosity, suddenly froze near the grand staircase. His glass slipped from his hand, shattering on the floor.

"What..." David stammered, his face turning as pale as chalk as he stared at Clara. "What did you just say?"

May you like

Clara turned slowly toward David, her eyes filling with warm, overflowing tears.

"David..." Clara whispered softly, reaching her trembling hand out to him. "My sweet boy... your name isn't David Vance. Your real name is Arthur Sterling Jr. You are my son."
