Chapter 4 - The Sterling Vault Beneath the Manor

The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

David took three slow, agonizing steps down the marble stairs, staring at Clara’s face. For the first time, he noticed the subtle, undeniable similarities: the shape of her eyes, the gentle curve of her brow, the stubborn set of her jaw.

"No..." David whispered, looking back at Victor, the man he had called "Uncle" and mentor for his entire adult life. "Uncle Victor... tell me she’s lying. Tell me this is a delusion."

Victor avoided David’s eyes, turning instead to his head of security. "Clear the room! Everyone out! The party is over!"

"Nobody moves!"

The sharp order came from the back of the hall. The massive double entrance doors slammed open once again, and ten officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, led by a stern-faced Federal Prosecutor, marched into the ballroom with drawn badges.

"Federal Prosecutor Thomas Vance," the lead officer declared, his voice cutting through the panic. "This mansion is now a federal crime scene under an active emergency warrant."

Victor collapsed back against the fireplace mantel. "On what grounds?!"

"On the grounds of wire fraud, human trafficking, conspiracy to commit murder, and murder," Prosecutor Vance stated coldly. "Mr. Julian Sterling contacted our office four weeks ago upon his return to the United States. The evidence provided from the S.S. Meridian recovery has already been verified by naval forensics."

Prosecutor Vance looked at Julian and Clara, nodding respectfully. "Mr. and Mrs. Sterling, we require the physical opening of the master vault to secure the original 1986 estate ledgers."

"It's down here," Julian said calmly, leading the way toward the grand library at the back of the mansion.

The crowd of guests followed at a distance, paralyzed by a mixture of shock and morbid fascination. David walked right beside Clara, his arms hovering near her, ready to catch his frail mother if she stumbled, his mind spinning from the catastrophic revelation of his true identity.

Inside the sprawling, two-story mahogany library, Julian walked straight to the massive fieldstone fireplace. He reached up, pressing a concealed lever within the carved stone mantle.

With a heavy, mechanical groan, the back wall of the fireplace slid open, revealing a hidden spiral staircase leading down into the dark foundation of the estate.

"The underground vault," Julian explained, descending the stone steps, followed by Clara, David, Prosecutor Vance, and the armed federal agents. Victor was forced down the stairs in handcuffs by two agents.

At the bottom of the damp stone staircase sat a massive, circular steel door built into the solid bedrock, featuring two heavy keyholes—one made of silver, one made of gold.

"For forty years, Victor, you could only access the outer accounts because you only had the silver key," Julian said, taking the golden key from his pocket.

Clara stepped forward, pulling a small silver key from around her neck—the one she had kept hidden inside the rain-soaked envelope.

Together, husband and wife inserted their keys into the twin locks simultaneously.
