Chapter 2 - The Wings of Refuge

The heavy leather cabin door of the Gulfstream G650 hissed shut, sealing out the damp, cold twilight of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Inside, the quiet hum of the auxiliary power unit provided a steady, comforting rhythm against the rhythmic patter of rain striking the oval double-paned windows.
Holden Cross took off his wet wool overcoat and handed it to the flight attendant, who nodded in quiet understanding before retreating to the galley to prepare warm towels and steaming mugs of cocoa.
Maisie and Jonah stood side by side in the center aisle of the wide-body cabin. Their tiny sneakers sank into the plush white cashmere carpet. They looked around with wide, startled eyes, as if expecting the gilded mahogany paneling, cream leather armchairs, and glowing brass fixtures to dissolve into vapor at any second.
"Is this a flying house?" Maisie asked softly. Her voice was barely a whisper, yet it carried an ache that made Holden's chest constrict.
"It's a plane, sweet pea," Holden said softly, unbuttoning his suit jacket and kneeling in front of them so he wasn't towering over their small frames. "It's going to take us to my home in Bellevue. You're going to have warm food, soft beds, and a place where no one will ever raise a voice at you again."
Jonah squeezed his stuffed dog—its fur matted from tear stains and airport dust—against his ribs. "Is Brianna coming back?"
"No, Jonah," Holden answered, looking the little boy directly in his eyes with unwavering absolute certainty. "Brianna is with the police. She is never going to come near you or your sister again. I promise you that on my life."
Jonah swallowed hard, his pale blue eyes searching Holden's face for any sign of deceit. When he found none, he let out a tiny, shuddering breath—a breath he seemed to have been holding since the moment his father's car plummeted off the mountain pass.
"Sit here," Holden said, guiding them gently toward a wide, plush leather banquette equipped with custom child-restraint safety harnesses. "Let's get you buckled in for takeoff."
While the flight attendant brought out hot chocolate topped with marshmallows and plates of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, Julian stepped into the forward cabin. The head of security held an encrypted tablet in his hand, his expression solemn and tight.
Holden excused himself, stepping toward the private state room at the rear of the aircraft. "What do we have, Julian?"
Julian tapped the screen, displaying a series of financial ledgers, corporate filings, and emergency police dispatches.
"Brianna Vance—formerly Brianna Miller—married Richard Vance fourteen months ago," Julian reported in a low, sharp tone. "Richard Vance was the founder and majority shareholder of Vance Logistics, a freight and cold-storage empire valued at approximately two hundred and twenty million dollars. The twins, Maisie and Jonah, are Richard's biological children from his first wife, Eleanor, who passed away from leukemia three years ago."
Holden crossed his arms, his dark eyes hardening into flint. "And Richard's status?"
"Official reports filed with the King County Sheriff’s Department claim Richard Vance died forty-eight hours ago," Julian continued, his jaw working as he read the text. "His Tesla model X went through a guardrail on Highway 2 near Stevens Pass and fell three hundred feet into the ravine. The vehicle exploded on impact. The local coroner pronounced the driver dead at the scene based on personal effects and dental records provided directly by Brianna."
Holden tapped his fingers against the mahogany bulkhead. "The text message on Brianna’s dropped phone said, 'Make sure the brake lines on Richard's car look like a clean accident.' Who was she texting, Julian?"
"The contact was listed under an encrypted burner number," Julian answered. "Our cyber team traced the IP relay to a private garage in South Tacoma owned by a disgraced former racing mechanic named Sam 'Grease' Taylor. But here's the anomaly, Mr. Cross."
Julian zoomed in on a high-resolution satellite photograph of the crash site.
"The accident happened on Tuesday night at 11:15 PM," Julian said. "By 6:00 AM Wednesday morning, Brianna had already filed emergency probate papers in King County Superior Court to seize control of Vance Logistics, citing Richard’s will, which mysteriously leaves one hundred percent of his estate to her, while appointing her sole legal guardian of the children."
"And then she booked a one-way ticket to Zurich," Holden said coldly. "She planned to drop the children at Sea-Tac, board the flight, let the kids be picked up by state social services as 'unidentified abandonments,' and liquidate the estate from a Swiss bank account before anyone connected the dots."
"Exactly," Julian agreed. "Except for one fatal flaw in her plan."
"What flaw?"
Julian swiped to a second secure medical database. "I ran a deep check on the state morgue registry through our legal contacts. The body recovered from the burning Tesla on Stevens Pass was severely charred, but the preliminary autopsy report—which hasn't been released to the public yet—noted something strange."
Holden leaned in closer. "Speak, Julian."
"The height of the deceased in the vehicle was registered at five-foot-ten," Julian whispered. "Richard Vance was six-foot-four. The coroner flagged the discrepancy six hours ago and halted the official identification process. Someone else was in that car, Mr. Cross. Or Richard Vance was moved before the fire caught."
Holden’s pulse spiked. A sudden, dangerous realization ignited in his mind. "If Richard Vance wasn't the man in that car... where is he?"
"We don't know," Julian admitted. "But if Brianna paid Sam Taylor to cut the brake lines, and her partner-in-crime realized the wrong body was in the wreck, Richard Vance might still be alive—held in secret somewhere while they try to force him to sign over the corporate authorization codes."
Holden looked toward the front cabin, where through the open door he could see Maisie wiping a smear of chocolate off Jonah's cheek, both of them giggling quietly for the very first time.
"Get my legal team on a conference call," Holden commanded, his voice carrying the immovable weight of a man commanding an empire. "Tell Marcus Vance to file emergency ex parte motions for protective custody over Maisie and Jonah. Freeze every asset tied to Vance Logistics, Brianna Vance, and Sam Taylor. And tell our covert surveillance unit to put eyes on every private medical facility between Seattle and Spokane."

"Consider it done, Mr. Cross," Julian said, touching his earpiece. "And what about the children?"
Holden looked back toward the twins. "They are Crosses now until their father is found. And God help anyone who tries to take them."
