Chapter 10 - A Place Called Home

As the sun began to set over Puget Sound, painting the evening sky in brilliant shades of violet, rose, and gold, the birthday party guests gradually departed, leaving the grounds of Cross Manor quiet and serene.

The soft evening breeze rustled through the leaves of the grand oak trees. String lights hanging across the stone patio glowed warmly like golden fireflies.

Holden, Richard, and Julian sat on the patio chairs, sipping warm tea while watching Maisie and Jonah sit on the soft grass near the edge of the lawn.

Jonah held his brown stuffed dog on his lap, carefully wrapping a small red ribbon around its neck. Maisie sat beside him, sketching a drawing of a big brick house with two bright suns and a giant moon in her coloring book.

Julian checked his watch, smiling faintly. "It's 8:17 PM, Mr. Cross."

Holden looked at his watch, then looked over at the children. "One year ago to the minute."

"One year ago, we were terrified," Richard murmured softly. "Now... we are complete."

Maisie set her coloring book down on the grass. She took Jonah’s hand, and together the two six-year-olds walked across the lawn toward the patio where Holden and Richard were sitting.

Maisie stepped up to Holden's chair. She pulled a small, hand-drawn card from her sweater pocket and handed it to him.

Holden unfolded the card. On the front was a drawing of a giant airplane with big golden wings. Inside, written in wobbly, adorable six-year-old handwriting, were the words:

“To Uncle Holden. Thank you for stopping at Gate B12. You are our hero. We are home.”

Holden felt warm tears prick the corners of his eyes. He set the card down on the table, leaned down, and pulled both Maisie and Jonah into a giant, warm hug.

Richard joined them, wrapping his big arms around all three of them, holding his family tight against his chest.

The dark shadows of the past were gone forever. The cruel lies, the greedy plots, and the cold airport benches were nothing more than a fading memory behind them.

In their place stood a fortress built on truth, unyielding courage, and a love that no storm could ever tear down.

Holden looked up at the brilliant, glowing crescent moon rising in the evening sky over Seattle, holding the two children who had changed his destiny forever.

"We are home," Holden whispered into the quiet night air. "And we are never letting go."
