Chapter 5 - The Fortress of Justice

The next morning, the sky over Bellevue was bright, crisp, and clear.

At 10:00 AM, three black armored SUVs pulled up to the grand front gates of Cross Manor.

Standing outside the iron gates was Victor Sterling, wearing a tailored navy suit, accompanied by two process servers and three officers from the local sheriff’s department holding an emergency warrant.

Victor was fifty-two, balding, with sharp, fox-like eyes and a posture built on decades of corporate bullying. He banged his fist against the brass intercom box.

"Holden Cross!" Victor yelled into the microphone. "I know you're in there! Open these gates immediately! I have a court order from King County Probate Court granting me custody of Maisie and Jonah Vance! If you do not relinquish the children within five minutes, you will be arrested for felony kidnapping!"

The massive iron gates slowly swung open.

Victor sneered, turning to his process servers. "Follow me. We take the kids and go straight to the Vance Logistics board meeting."

They marched up the long stone driveway toward the main house. But as they reached the wide marble steps leading to the front doors, the double doors clicked open.

Holden Cross walked out onto the terrace. He wore a crisp dark grey suit, his hands resting casually in his pockets. Behind him walked Marcus Vance, carrying a gold-embossed leather legal portfolio, and two armed guards from Cross Security.

"Good morning, Victor," Holden said calmly, looking down at the group from the top of the steps.

"Don't 'good morning' me, Cross!" Victor barked, stepping up the first two stairs and holding out the legal paper. "This is an emergency order signed by Judge Henderson granting me physical custody of my late partner's children! Surrender them right now!"

Marcus Vance took one step forward, opening his leather portfolio.

"I'm afraid that paper in your hand is completely worthless, Mr. Sterling," Marcus announced smoothly.

Victor frowned. "What are you talking about? It’s a signed judicial order!"

"It was a signed order," Marcus corrected, "until thirty minutes ago when the Washington State Supreme Court issued an emergency administrative stay."

Marcus pulled a fresh document from his folder and held it up.

"Judge Henderson was removed from the probate bench this morning following an emergency federal inquiry," Marcus explained, his tone laced with immense satisfaction. "It turns out Mr. Sterling made a forty-thousand-dollar contribution to Judge Henderson's reelection campaign fund through an offshore shell company late yesterday evening."

Victor’s face went ash-gray. "That's... that's a lie! A slanderous lie!"

"And furthermore," Holden chimed in, stepping closer to the edge of the terrace, "you referred to Richard Vance as your 'late partner' just now, Victor."

"Because he's dead!" Victor shouted, clutching his coat. "He died in a car accident!"

Holden pulled his phone from his pocket, pressed a button, and held it up to a speaker mounted on the terrace wall.

A voice echoed across the quiet courtyard—a weak, raspy, but unmistakable voice recorded just three hours earlier from an ICU bed at Harborview Medical Center, where Richard had been secretly transferred under federal protection during the night.

"Victor..." Richard Vance's recorded voice rasped through the speakers. "You sold my life for a corporate share... and you tried to throw my children to the wind... I am coming for my company, Victor... and I am coming for you."

Victor Sterling backed down the marble steps as if he had been struck by lightning. He staggered against the hood of his sedan, his breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps.

"Richard... Richard is..."

"Richard is alive," Holden declared, his voice ringing through the morning air like an iron bell. "He has already regained consciousness. The FBI has recorded his full statement regarding your embezzlement of sixty million dollars from Vance Logistics over the last three years."

Two dark blue unmarked federal sedans sped up the driveway, blocking Victor's SUVs from behind. Four federal agents stepped out, their badges glinting in the morning sun.

"Victor Sterling," Special Agent Miller announced, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, corporate fraud, witness tampering, and conspiracy to commit murder for financial gain."

Victor looked up at Holden on the terrace, his eyes wild with desperate, useless rage. "You ruined me! You had nothing to do with this! Why do you care about those damn kids?!"

Holden looked down at the disgraced executive, his face cold, calm, and completely unyielding.

"Because unlike you, Victor," Holden said softly, "I know what a child is worth."

As the federal agents forced Victor into the back of the sedan and drove him away, the heavy oak front door opened once more.

Maisie and Jonah stepped out onto the sunny terrace, wearing warm red sweaters, holding hands.

Maisie looked up at Holden, then looked out at the empty driveway where the police cars had vanished.

"Is the bad man gone forever, Uncle Holden?" she asked softly.

Holden knelt down between the twins, wrapping his strong arms around their small shoulders, pulling them close against his chest.

"He's gone forever, sweet pea," Holden promised, looking up at the bright blue sky. "And today, we’re going to the hospital to see someone very special."
