Chapter 5 - Evelyn’s Nightmare at the Country Club

If Derek’s world was burning down, his mother Evelyn’s universe had spontaneously combusted into a blazing inferno of social ruin.

By Monday morning, news of the Winnetka housewarming fiasco had spread through Chicago’s elite social circles faster than a wildfire through dry timber. The story wasn’t just about a declined credit card; it was the delicious, scandalous revelation that the great Derek Mercer—the self-proclaimed real estate tycoon—was a complete fraud who lived in a house owned by his supposedly “pathetic” wife.

Evelyn sat at her usual velvet armchair in the Oak Brook Country Club dining room, expecting her morning mimosa and the sympathetic whispers of her dearest friends.

Instead, the dining room was dead silent.

As Evelyn walked toward her favorite window table, three prominent society matrons—women she had lorded over for decades—suddenly turned their chairs away, pretending to study their breakfast menus with intense fascination.

Evelyn forced her signature haughty smile, marching up to Margaret Kensington, the undisputed queen bee of the country club board.

“Good morning, Margaret,” Evelyn purred, extending a manicured hand. “Can you believe the utter incompetence of the catering staff this weekend? Some glitch with the bank—completely ridiculous, of course. Derek is already sorting it out with his corporate attorneys—”

Margaret slowly lowered her coffee cup. She didn't shake Evelyn’s hand. Instead, her eyes swept over Evelyn with undisguised disgust.

“Evelyn,” Margaret said coldly, her voice carrying across the entire silent dining room. “Save your breath. We all know the truth. Your son doesn't own that mansion. He doesn't even own the suit he was wearing—it was rented on credit. And your daughter-in-law? The woman you treated like a servant and threw soup at? She owns the entire property, the holding company, and half the commercial real estate portfolio in this county.”

Evelyn recoiled as if she had been slapped across the face. “That’s... that’s a lie! That little nobody sells residential starter homes! She lives off Derek!”

“Does she?” Margaret scoffed, signaling the waiter to clear her table. “My husband’s commercial firm tried to pitch an acquisition to Apex Holdings last week. Do you know who walked into the boardroom as the primary managing director? Claire Mercer. Or should I say, Claire Sterling—using her maiden name for corporate filings.”

Margaret stood up, smoothing her designer skirt.

“And I’m told,” Margaret added with a chilling smile, “that your son has been legally evicted from the Winnetka estate, his bank accounts are frozen, and he’s currently crashing on your pull-out sofa because he has nowhere else to go. Do try to keep your soup off the upholstery, Evelyn. It doesn't suit your new social bracket.”

Margaret walked away, leaving Evelyn standing alone in the center of the dining room while two hundred eyes burned into her with silent, merciless triumph.
