Chapter 10 - A New Home and a Clean Slate

The following Saturday evening, I hosted a dinner party.

There was no white-and-gold event tent. There were no fake executives, no pompous relatives, and no snobby mother-in-law lurking in the shadows with a bowl of leftover soup.

Instead, our dining room was filled with warmth, genuine laughter, and the mouthwatering aroma of roasted garlic, fresh herbs, and homemade lasagna.

My closest friends, my loyal business partners, and a few neighbors who had stood by us through thick and thin gathered around our massive oak dining table.

Emma and Lily sat right at the center of the table, wearing their sparkly crowns, laughing as Marcus Vance clumsily tried to perform a magic trick with a dinner napkin.

There were no separate tables. No children hiding by coat racks. No one waiting for scraps. Everyone was an honored guest, seated equally around a table built on honesty, hard work, and unconditional love.

I stood up, tapping my water glass gently with a silver spoon.

The room quieted down, twenty pairs of warm, friendly eyes turning toward me.

“To new beginnings,” I said, raising my glass high, the candlelight reflecting off my ring and the bright smiles of my daughters. “To knowing your own worth, never shrinking yourself for anyone else, and always making sure your table has room for everyone.”

“To new beginnings!” everyone cheered in unison.

The glasses clinked together in a sweet, harmonious chime that echoed through the house.

I took a sip of my sparkling cider, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the moonlit waves of Lake Michigan rolling gently against the shore. The storm had finally passed, and the water was calm, deep, and brilliantly clear.

We had made it. And this time, we were home to stay.
