Chapter 9 - The True Queen of Winnetka

Two months later, the final court hearing concluded in a sunlit downtown courtroom.

The judge’s ruling was swift and comprehensive. Full physical and legal custody of Emma and Lily was awarded to me, with supervised, restricted visitation rights for Derek—contingent upon him completing mandatory anger management and psychological counseling.

Because of the ironclad prenuptial agreement I had insisted upon signing a decade ago (which Derek had barely glanced at before signing in his arrogant youth), my corporate assets, real estate portfolio, and personal accounts remained entirely untouched and protected. Derek walked away from the marriage with his personal clothes, a second-hand laptop, and a mountain of legal debt.

As I walked down the grand stone steps of the courthouse into the crisp November air, a gentle breeze rustled the autumn leaves.

Waiting at the bottom of the steps were Emma and Lily, holding hands with Marcus Vance, who had brought along two oversized boxes of gourmet chocolates to celebrate.

“Mommy!” Emma cried out, running up the steps and throwing her small arms around my waist. “Did the judge say we win?”

I scooped her up into my arms, pressing a kiss to her forehead.

“We didn't just win, sweetie,” I smiled, looking out over the Chicago skyline where the towering glass skyscrapers gleamed in the afternoon sun. “We built our own castle. And nobody will ever make you sit at a separate table again.”

Lily grinned, holding up a sparkling silver tiara she had bought at the gift shop across the street. “Can I wear this to our new house every single day?”

May you like

“Every single day,” I promised.

We got into our sleek, brand-new black SUV—fully owned, fully paid for, and driven by a professional chauffeur—and headed north toward our new home. Not a rented mansion built on lies, but a stunning, custom-built waterfront estate overlooking Lake Michigan that I had purchased, designed, and paid for entirely in my own name.
