Chapter 6 - The Eviction Notice and the Seizure of Assets

Back at the Winnetka mansion, the morning sun revealed a scene of utter humiliation for Derek Mercer.
He hadn't slept a wink. He had spent the entire night pacing across the hardwood floors of the grand foyer, his phone constantly ringing with calls from debt collectors, angry suppliers, and bank representatives informing him that his lines of credit had been permanently canceled.
At 8:00 a.m., heavy knocking shook the mahogany front door.
Derek pulled the door open, his hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, wearing a wrinkled dress shirt with no tie.
Standing on the porch was not a delivery driver or a concerned friend. It was a county sheriff’s deputy accompanied by two commercial movers and a locksmith.
“Are you Derek Mercer?” the deputy asked, holding a clipboard.
“Yes,” Derek croaked, his throat tight. “Look, there’s been a massive misunderstanding—my attorneys are sorting out the banking issues—pardon me, but who are you people?”
“County Sheriff’s Department,” the deputy replied flatly, handing him a sheaf of legal documents. “We are executing a writ of possession and immediate property clearance authorized by Apex Holdings LLC, the sole legal titleholder of this estate. You have thirty minutes to gather your personal effects and vacate the premises.”
“Vacate?!” Derek shouted, his voice cracking hysterically. “This is my house! I hosted my housewarming here two days ago! I am a regional director!”
“Sir, according to the title deed filed with Cook County, the property belongs exclusively to a private trust managed by Claire Mercer,” the deputy said, stepping past him into the foyer. “And as of 6:00 a.m. today, your lease-to-own agreement has been legally terminated for breach of financial covenants.”
The locksmith immediately stepped forward, pulling out a heavy ring of tools and walking toward the side door.
“Wait! You can’t do this!” Derek yelled, backing into the living room as the commercial movers marched in with large cardboard boxes, dumping them on the floor. “Call Claire! Where is my wife?! Let me talk to my wife!”
“If you wish to speak with Ms. Mercer,” the deputy said coldly, “I suggest you schedule an appointment through her corporate legal team. Now pack your bags, Mr. Mercer. Your time is up.”
Within twenty-five minutes, Derek found himself standing on the gravel driveway of the Winnetka mansion, holding two cardboard boxes containing his clothes, his laptop, and a few framed photographs.

The heavy iron gates swung shut with a loud, metallic clang, locking automatically behind him.
Derek dropped his boxes onto the grass, fell to his knees in the autumn dirt, and buried his face in his hands as reality finally crashed down upon him with crushing, inescapable weight.
