Chapter 3 - The Gaslighting

"You’re being paranoid, Maya."

The words became the soundtrack of my home life. Every time I questioned why the utilities were being cut off, or why Diane was suddenly driving a new car while Eric complained about grocery prices, the answer was the same.

"You fell because you were clumsy," Eric said over dinner one night, casually carving a steak he couldn't afford. "Don't try to make it seem like we pushed you. You’ve always been prone to these... episodes."

He was rewriting reality. He was trying to make me doubt my own memory of the day at the pool. It was a classic tactic: isolate the target, break their confidence, and then control the narrative.

Diane was even worse. She stopped by the house unannounced, wearing expensive perfume and looking smug. "I brought you some tea, dear," she said, setting a porcelain cup on my nightstand. "It’ll help with your nerves. You’ve been so hysterical since the accident."

I took the tea, poured it into a potted plant when she wasn't looking, and smiled.

"Thank you, Diane," I said, my voice soft. "I think you're right. I’ve just been so stressed about the baby."

She patted my hand, her eyes cold. "It’s for the best. Eric handles the money, and I handle the family. You just focus on recovery."

They thought they had me caged. They thought that because I was staying quiet, I was defeated. They didn't see the notebook hidden behind the nursery wall, filled with dates, bank routing numbers, and the evidence of Diane’s gambling habits. They didn't know that I had been recording their conversations, capturing every admission of guilt, every condescending remark, every piece of evidence I would need to secure my freedom.
