Chapter 7 - The Master Stroke

The day the baby arrived, the chaos I had been waiting for finally descended. It was a premature, terrifying birth, complicated by the stress I had been under.

As I lay in the labor ward, struggling through the agony of contractions, Eric stood in the corner of the room, scrolling through his phone.

"Mom’s in trouble," he muttered, not looking at me. "The bailiffs are at the house. I have to go deal with this."

"I’m in labor, Eric," I gasped, the pain radiating through my spine.

"You’re in a hospital," he retorted, tucking his phone away. "You have doctors. Mom has no one. I’ll be back after I settle the paperwork."

He walked out. He left his wife in the middle of a life-threatening birth to save his mother’s pride.

As the nurses swarmed me, my mind was crystal clear. I gave the lead nurse my lawyer’s contact information and a pre-signed power of attorney.

"If he comes back," I whispered, clutching the nurse's arm, "he is not to be allowed near the baby. He is a flight risk. Everything is in that file."

While I was fighting for my daughter’s first breath, my lawyers were simultaneously serving Eric with divorce papers, a restraining order, and a notice of forensic audit at his office. By the time I held my daughter—my beautiful, perfect little girl—I was a free woman.

When Eric returned to the hospital hours later, expecting to find a submissive wife to hold his hand, he was met by hospital security. They didn't escort him to my room; they escorted him to the exit. He was shouting, his face purple with rage, but it didn't matter. The money was gone, his reputation was being shredded in court, and for the first time in my life, I was completely, blissfully alone.
