Chapter 4 - The Investigation

The private investigator I hired wasn't the kind you see in movies. He was a quiet, unassuming man named Arthur, who specialized in forensic accounting. He didn't care about the drama; he cared about the numbers.
"Your mother-in-law is a goldmine, Maya," Arthur said, handing me a manila folder during our secret meeting at a local park.
I opened the folder. It was all there. The "homelessness" lie was a fabrication. Diane had been losing thousands of dollars a week at underground poker games. The money Eric had "borrowed" from me hadn't gone to rent; it had gone straight into the pocket of a local loan shark.
"She's leveraged to the hilt," Arthur explained. "And your husband? He’s been co-signing loans he can’t possibly pay back. If they don't get a massive influx of cash within the month, the house will be seized, and they’ll both be under criminal investigation for fraud."
I felt a cold shiver of clarity. They weren't just greedy; they were desperate. And that desperation made them dangerous.
"How much time do I have?" I asked.

"Not much," Arthur replied. "But if you move now, you can insulate yourself from the fallout. You have enough evidence to prove financial abuse. If you file for divorce before the house of cards collapses, you can walk away with your own assets intact and full custody of the baby."
I walked home that day feeling like a ghost, moving through a world they thought they owned. I knew exactly how this story would end, and for the first time since the pool, I wasn't afraid. I was ready.
