Chapter 2 - The Glass House Unveiled

The aftermath was not a loud explosion but a slow, calculated disintegration of everything Vanessa Hale had fought to build. As Nathan carried Lily out of the ballroom, the room erupted into whispers. The three hundred guests, the titans of industry, and the socialites who had spent the night currying favor with the future Mrs. Whitfield, stood paralyzed. They watched as the ledger-carrying men took their places at the tables, turning the celebratory gala into a forensic audit.
Claire followed them, her heart hammering against her ribs. She had lived in fear of this moment—the moment her life in the shadows collided with the blinding, dangerous light of Nathan’s world. In the private suite where he placed Lily on a plush velvet sofa, Nathan finally exhaled.
"I'm sorry," Claire whispered, her voice shaking as she hovered by the door. "I shouldn't have brought her. I just thought..."
"You thought because I invited you, I was a man of his word," Nathan said, turning to her. "Claire, Vanessa didn't just break those toys. She broke the only trust I had left in this house."

He explained then, in brief, terrifying bursts of clarity, that he had known about Vanessa’s cruelty for months. He hadn't been waiting for her to change; he had been waiting for her to reveal herself in front of a witness he could trust. The gala was the trap. The ruined gifts were the final confirmation of her nature.
"She believed this house was a kingdom she could rule," Nathan said, pacing the room. "She didn't know that this house is actually a vault."
