Chapter 3 - The Audit of Souls

The audit of the Whitfield estate took three days. It was a brutal, systematic scrubbing of Vanessa Hale’s history. It turned out she hadn't just been a fiancé; she had been an architect of embezzlement, slowly siphoning funds from Nathan’s charitable organizations into a web of offshore accounts intended for her own exit strategy.
Claire, meanwhile, was thrust into the center of the storm. She was no longer the invisible housekeeper. She was the star witness. Under the protection of Nathan’s team, she was sequestered in the estate’s library, identifying thousands of documents, explaining how Vanessa had "cleaned" the accounts, and detailing the psychological abuse the staff had endured under her "rule."
During the quiet hours, Nathan and Claire found themselves in the kitchen—the same kitchen where he had once asked her about Lily’s birthday. The power dynamic had shifted. Nathan, the billionaire, was now asking for her help.
"Why me?" Claire asked one evening, watching him stir a cup of tea, his expensive suit jacket discarded. "Why did you care if Lily had a birthday?"

"Because," Nathan said, looking at the door Lily had gone through, "I grew up in a house like this, Claire. My father owned everything, but he didn't own a single memory of me. When I saw you with her, the way you looked at her while you were scrubbing floors... I realized that you had something I had been trying to buy for thirty years."
He was looking for something more than a marriage; he was looking for a reason to burn down the artifice of his own life.
