Chapter 3 - The Fractured Marriage & The Hidden Room

The grand hallway of the Sterling Manor was silent, illuminated only by the faint glow of brass wall sconces.

Clara ran down the long carpeted corridor, her lungs burning, her eyes searching for any sign of her baby. When she reached the massive double doors of the East Wing nursery, she threw her weight against the brass handles.

Locked.

"Leo!" Clara cried, knocking her fists against the heavy wood. "Leo, Mommy’s here!"

From inside, she heard the faint, muffled sound of a lullaby playing from a digital mobile, but no crying. Eleanor’s hired private night-nurses were inside, keeping the child secluded under strict orders.

"Keyholes are heavy deadbolts, Clara. You won't break those down."

Clara spun around. David was standing at the end of the corridor, looking exhausted and broken. The tailored posture he usually maintained was gone, replaced by a slumping, defeated stance.

"Get the key, David," Clara demanded, taking two steps toward him. "You’re her son. You have the access codes for this house. Get the key and open this door."

David squeezed his eyes shut, dragging a hand through his dark hair. "I can't, Clara. You don't understand how deep this goes. If I cross my mother, she revokes my directorship at the firm. She freezes the accounts. She can invalidate the lease on our house, take my car, and pull every legal trigger she has stored away. We will be bankrupt on the street by tomorrow morning."

Clara stepped up to him, grabbing the lapels of his jacket, forcing him to look down into her eyes.

"Listen to yourself!" she hissed, her voice vibrating with raw fury. "You are prioritizing your trust fund over your own child! She hit me three weeks ago with passive-aggressive threats, she’s been gaslighting me for months, and tonight she physically assaulted me and stole our baby! Do you care more about your mother’s money than your own blood?!"

"Of course I love Leo!" David shouted, his control finally snapping. "I love him more than life! But if we fight her the wrong way, she will use her judges to lock you in Blackwood Asylum permanently! Do you think you can help Leo from inside a padded cell, Clara?! Is that what you want?!"

Clara froze, the harsh reality of his words washing over her.

David leaned in, his voice dropping to an anxious whisper. "She has security cameras in every main hallway. She has armed guards on the perimeter. We can't just run out the front door with him. We need proof that she forged those medical records. If we find proof of fraud, her legal hold over us collapses, and the police will actually help us."

Clara searched David’s eyes. For months, she had resented his inability to stand up to Eleanor, but right now, she saw the terrifying truth: David was just as much a prisoner in this house as she was. He had been conditioned since birth to fear Eleanor Sterling’s wrath.

"Where would she keep the real records?" Clara asked softly.

David glanced nervously down the hallway toward Eleanor’s private study. "Her inner office. The room behind the library. Nobody is allowed in there except her personal secretary. But the security system resets its internal backup log at midnight every night for five minutes."

"That gives us a five-minute window," Clara said, her resolve tightening like steel. "Midnight is twenty minutes away."

"Clara, if she catches us in there—"

"I don't care," Clara interrupted coldly. "I'm going into that room."

While David kept watch near the library balcony, Clara crept through the shadows of the massive two-story library. At 11:59 PM, the small green light on the electronic keypad beside the hidden oak bookshelf panel flickered from solid green to a blinking amber—the system's automatic diagnostic cycle.

Clara slipped past the heavy door into Eleanor’s private sanctuary.

The room smelled of stale scotch, leather, and old paper. The walls were lined with locked glass cabinets containing private estate ledgers and antique legal codices.

Clara rushed to the massive cherry-wood desk in the center of the room. She began pulling open drawers, flipping through files under the tiny beam of her phone’s flashlight.

Near the bottom of a locked steel pedestal drawer—which she managed to pry open using a brass letter opener—she found a thick velvet-bound journal and a small velvet pouch.

Clara opened the journal. The handwriting was Eleanor’s—sharp, slanted, and precise.

She flipped to the entries from six months ago, right after Leo was born:

"The girl is weak. Clara's bloodline brings nothing to the Sterling name. But the boy... the boy has Arthur's eyes. He is the rightful heir. I lost my firstborn son thirty years ago to that terrible fever because the doctors were incompetent. I will not let this common girl ruin Arthur's legacy. She must be systematically removed."

Clara’s blood ran cold. Eleanor didn't just dislike her; she viewed Leo as a replacement for a child she had lost decades ago.

Clara reached into the velvet pouch beside the journal. Inside were three small glass vials containing a clear, odorless liquid labeled Brotizolam - Industrial Concentrate—a powerful, short-acting sedative known to induce temporary amnesia, confusion, and severe neurological distress when administered in small doses.

Beside the vials sat a handwritten ledger listing direct monthly wire transfers of twenty thousand dollars to Dr. Harrison Vance.

"I found it," Clara whispered, her hands shaking violently with a mixture of terror and triumphant rage. "I found everything."

Suddenly, the overhead lights slammed on, flooding the room in blinding white light.

"Searching through my personal belongings, Clara?" Eleanor’s voice echoed from the doorway.

Standing behind Eleanor was Chief Security Officer Vance—the doctor’s brother—holding a sleek black taser in his gloved hand.
