Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

Eleanor walked slowly into the room, her silk robe trailing smoothly across the Persian rug. Her expression was devoid of any emotion, save for a cold, ruthless amusement.
"I must admit, I underestimated your desperation," Eleanor said, resting her hands on her gold-headed cane. "I thought you would be upstairs crying into your pillow like the pathetic little orphan you are."
Clara stood her ground behind the desk, clutching the velvet journal and the glass vials tightly against her ribs.
"You've been poisoning me," Clara said, her voice shaking with righteous fury. "You’ve been slipping heavy sedatives into my food and tea for months! You paid off Dr. Vance to write fake psychiatric reports so you could steal my baby!"
Eleanor tilted her head, taking a slow step forward. "Steal? My dear child, one cannot steal what already belongs to the family. You were merely an incubator for the next Sterling heir. You fulfilled your purpose. Now, you are an inconvenience."
"I have the vials, Eleanor," Clara declared, holding up the small glass bottles. "I have your journal! I have the wire transfer logs to your crooked doctor! If I take this to the State Police, you will die in a federal prison!"
Eleanor let out a soft, dry laugh—a sound so hollow it made the hair on Clara’s arms stand up.
"Do you really think you're leaving this house with those, Clara?" Eleanor asked smoothly. She glanced at the guard beside her. "Officer Vance, please escort my daughter-in-law to the guesthouse. She has clearly suffered another violent psychotic episode. Make sure she is secured in the lower suite until Dr. Vance arrives with the transport vehicle for Blackwood."
The heavy-set security officer stepped forward, raising his taser. "Come quietly, Mrs. Sterling."
"Get your hands off her!"
A sudden force crashed into Officer Vance from the side. David had rushed through the library door, slamming his full weight into the security chief, knocking the taser to the floor. The weapon went off with a loud blue spark against the carpet.
"David?!" Eleanor snapped, her icy composure cracking for the first time. "What are you doing?!"
"Run, Clara! Run!" David yelled, grappling with the heavy guard on the floor, pinning his arms behind his back.
Clara didn't hesitate. She grabbed the evidence bag, sprinted past Eleanor—who reached out with her cane to trip her—and burst out into the library.
"Security to the main hall!" Eleanor screamed into her lapel radio, her voice echoing through the entire estate. "Lock down the perimeter! Contain the mother!"
Clara tore down the grand staircase, her heart thumping frantically in her ears. Alarm sirens began to blare throughout the mansion—a high-pitched electronic pulse that shattered the midnight silence. Red emergency lights flashed along the mahogany walls.
She reached the base of the stairs just as David came sprinting down behind her, his shirt torn, his face flushed with adrenaline.
"Where is he?!" Clara shouted over the roar of the alarms.
"East Wing, third floor!" David yelled, grabbing her hand. "The night-nurses use a private keycard on the utility elevator near the kitchen! Follow me!"
They raced through the commercial kitchen, vaulting over stainless steel counters. David grabbed a heavy iron skillet from a hanging rack, using it to smash the glass cover of the emergency fire control panel. The sudden surge of water from the ceiling sprinklers triggered an automated lock bypass across the domestic service doors.
The utility elevator doors slid open. They threw themselves inside, and David slammed his master keycard into the slot, pressing the button for the third floor.
As the elevator creaked upward, David looked at Clara, his breath ragged, his eyes filled with a fierce, absolute clarity she had never seen before.
"I saw the vials, Clara," David whispered, taking her face in his hands. "I saw the entries in her book. I was blind... God help me, I was so blind for so long. But I swear to you, she will never touch you or Leo ever again."
Clara pressed her forehead against his, tears mixing with the water from the fire sprinklers. "We get our boy, and we get out of here tonight."
The elevator chimed.
The doors slid open to reveal the third-floor nursery corridor. Two private guards were rushing toward the room, but David didn't stop. He charged forward, swinging the heavy iron skillet with furious precision, knocking the first guard off balance and driving the second back against the wall.
Clara sprinted past them, throwing open the white nursery door.
Sitting in a rocking chair near the crib was the lead nurse, holding six-month-old Leo, who was screaming in terror from the noise of the alarms.
"Give me my son!" Clara roared.
She ripped the baby from the nurse’s arms, pulling Leo tight against her chest, covering his tiny head with her coat to shield him from the cold spray of the fire sprinklers.
Leo’s small fingers instantly grabbed a lock of Clara’s wet hair, his crying subsiding as he recognized his mother’s scent.
"I've got him!" Clara called out.
David backed into the room, kicking the nursery door shut and sliding a heavy brass security bar into place.
Outside, heavy fists began hammering against the wood.
"We can't go back down the main hall," David said, pointing to the window leading out to the steep slate roof of the East Wing. "The fire escape leads down to the old garage."
Outside, a violent autumn storm had broken over the estate. Rain poured down in sheets, illuminated by flashes of lightning.

David opened the window, stepping out onto the slippery slate tiles first. "Pass him to me, Clara! Carefully!"
Holding her infant son wrapped tightly in her water-resistant jacket, Clara stepped out into the raging storm.
