Chapter 7 - Exposing the Empire

Inside Marcus’s cabin, the air was warm, smelling of cedar wood, pipe tobacco, and old legal books. Wall-to-ceiling shelves were packed with thousands of legal volumes, court transcripts, and investigative files.

Marcus laid out a feast of warm soup and crusty bread for Clara and David while baby Leo slept peacefully on a soft blanket near the hearth.

For two hours, Marcus examined the contents of Eleanor’s velvet journal, the glass vials of Brotizolam, and the financial transfer ledgers. He used a heavy jeweler's loupe to inspect the signatures on Dr. Vance’s fake psychiatric evaluations.

"This is extraordinary," Marcus whispered, his eyes gleaming behind his round spectacles. "She got sloppy. When Eleanor realized you were resisting her gaslighting, Clara, she rushed the timeline. Look at these wire transfers."

Marcus pointed his long finger at a line in the ledger.

"On the fourteenth of last month, Eleanor transferred fifty thousand dollars from the Sterling Charitable Trust to a private offshore account in the Bahamas registered to Dr. Harrison Vance," Marcus explained. "That’s not just bribery, David. That’s federal wire fraud and embezzlement of public non-profit funds."

"Will it stand up in court?" Clara asked desperately. "She issued an Amber Alert! The police are looking for me right now!"

"Chief Miller issued that alert illegally without a signed judicial warrant," Marcus sneered, pulling a heavy satellite phone from his desk. "I still have contacts in the State Attorney General’s office—honest prosecutors who have been looking for a way to break Eleanor’s hold over the municipal courts for a decade. If we present this physical evidence directly to the State Prosecutor, Eleanor’s local police chief won't be able to protect her."

"How long will that take?" David asked.

"Twelve hours," Marcus said. "I can have the Deputy Attorney General and a team of State Police investigators here by noon tomorrow. But we have to hold out until then."

Suddenly, the red lights of Marcus’s perimeter security monitor began to flash silently on his desk.

The external camera feed showed three black luxury SUVs pulling off the logging trail, parking fifty yards from the cabin. Dozens of heavily armed men in black tactical gear poured out into the trees, led by Chief Security Officer Vance.

"They tracked the land cruiser's satellite GPS," David cursed, jumping to his feet.

Marcus didn't panic. He calmly walked over to his wall cabinet, unlocking a heavy steel rack containing two tactical rifles and several boxes of ammunition.

"She found us faster than I expected," Marcus said, tossing a rifle to David. "Vance knows if we make it to sunrise, the state authorities will take over. He’s going to try to burn this cabin down and claim it was an accidental fire."

"Not with my son inside," Clara said, her voice filled with a terrifying, absolute defiance. She picked up a heavy iron poker from the fireplace. "What do we do?"

"We fall back to the root cellar beneath the floorboards," Marcus instructed, pulling a hidden latch beneath the rug. "It’s reinforced with reinforced concrete walls and a heavy blast door I installed ten years ago. They won't get through it with hand weapons."

Outside, a megaphone amplified Chief Vance’s harsh voice:

"MARCUS STERLING! WE KNOW THEY ARE INSIDE! HAND OVER THE INFANT AND THE STOLEN EVIDENCE, OR WE WILL USE FORCE!"

"Go! Into the cellar! Now!" Marcus ordered.

David guided Clara and baby Leo down the wooden stairs into the dark concrete room below. Marcus stepped down last, grabbing the heavy iron wheel handle on the inside of the steel door.

Just as he slammed the door shut, the sound of heavy gunfire erupted above them, bullets tearing through the floorboards of the cabin.
