Chapter 9 - The Fall of Eleanor Sterling

Two weeks later.
The main courtroom of the State Supreme Court was packed to capacity. The air was charged with intense anticipation as news cameras from every major national network lined the gallery walls.
Sitting at the prosecution table were Clara, David, and Marcus Sterling, accompanied by the lead State Prosecutor.
Across the room sat Eleanor Sterling, wearing an orange correctional jumpsuit, her hands secured by heavy waist chains. Beside her sat a team of four high-priced defense attorneys, but their faces were grim, lacking any of their usual arrogance.
Judge Robert Vance—no relation to the corrupt doctor—slammed his heavy gavel down three times, the sound echoing through the high-vaulted chamber.
"This court is now in session regarding the matter of State v. Eleanor Sterling, Harrison Vance, and Gerald Vance," Judge Vance thundered. "We are gathered to render final judgment on the emergency custody petitions and the criminal indictments handed down by the Grand Jury."
The State Prosecutor stood up, adjusting his papers.
"Your Honor," the prosecutor began, "the forensic evidence submitted by the State Police is undisputed. Toxicology reports conducted on Clara Sterling confirmed high concentrations of Brotizolam—a controlled sedative—in her hair follicles dating back six months, matching the exact chemical batch seized from Eleanor Sterling’s private safe."
The prosecutor pointed toward the defense table.
"Furthermore, digital bank records prove that Dr. Harrison Vance received over four hundred thousand dollars in direct bribes to issue fraudulent psychiatric commitment papers. Chief Security Officer Gerald Vance utilized illegal police channels to issue a false Amber Alert to facilitate a private kidnapping."
The prosecutor turned to face the judge. "The State requests the immediate, permanent termination of all familial access for Eleanor Sterling, and the maximum statutory sentences for all defendants."
Eleanor’s lead attorney stood up slowly, clearing his throat. "Your Honor... my client is an elderly woman of advanced age who suffered a temporary mental lapse due to—"
"Save your breath, Counselor," Judge Vance interrupted sternly, holding up his hand. "I have reviewed the private journals seized from your client's estate. I have read her own words, detailing a cold, calculated plan to drug her daughter-in-law, corrupt public officials, and steal a mother's infant child."
The judge looked down over his spectacles at Eleanor, his face filled with profound disgust.
"Eleanor Sterling," the judge declared, his voice echoing with absolute authority, "you have manipulated the legal system, abused your wealth, and displayed a breathtaking level of cruelty toward your own family. You are hereby sentenced to twenty-five years at the State Women's Maximum Security Institution without the possibility of parole."
Eleanor gasped, her body trembling violently as she attempted to stand up. "No! You can't do this to me! I am Eleanor Sterling! I own this city!"
"Bailiffs, remove the prisoner!" Judge Vance ordered, slamming his gavel down.
As the armed officers grabbed Eleanor’s arms, dragging her screaming through the side exit doors, the entire courtroom gallery erupted into applause.
Judge Vance turned his eyes toward Clara and David, his expression softening into one of deep respect.
"To Clara and David Sterling," Judge Vance said warmly, "this court formally strikes every fraudulent document filed against you. Full, sole, and unencumbered parental rights of Leo Sterling are permanently affirmed to you both. May your family find the peace you so richly deserve."
David wrapped his arm around Clara’s waist, pulling her close as tears of joy finally spilled down her cheeks.

They stepped out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sunlight, surrounded by cheering crowds, flashbulbs, and the warm embrace of Uncle Marcus.
The nightmare was officially over.
