Chapter 2 - The Tattoo Under the Skin

The summer breeze died down, leaving the backyard in a suffocating, heavy stillness. The music playing from the patio speakers suddenly sounded absurdly out of place against the raw terror unfolding beside the pool.

I stepped into the shallow water, my eyes fixed on the left side of Margaret’s torso.

The wet navy fabric of her swimsuit was stretched thin across her ribs. Beneath her pale, translucent skin, right over her ribcage, was a distinctive, raised scar—a dark, intricate mark shaped like a compass rose with a tiny engraved anchor in the center.

It wasn't just a scar. It was a exact, identical match to the custom tattoo Daniel had gotten on his left ribcage eight years ago—a piece he designed himself to honor his late father.

Except this mark wasn't inked on top of Margaret's skin.

It was beneath it. It was a raised skin graft—a piece of living tissue bearing Daniel's exact tattoo, surgically harvested and transplanted onto Margaret’s body.

Lily’s small hand trembled against mine as she sobbed into my thigh. “Daddy’s skin, Mommy... Daddy gave his skin to her...”

My lungs felt like they were collapsing. The world spun around me. I looked up from Margaret’s ribs to Daniel, who stood twenty feet away by the smoking grill.

Daniel looked like a man standing before a firing squad. His jaw was locked, his chest heaving, his eyes wide with a combination of shame and utter ruin.

“Daniel...” my voice came out as a raspy whisper before rising into a shriek that cut through the entire yard. “DANIEL! WHAT IS THAT ON HER BODY?!”

The fifty guests surrounding the pool went dead silent. My dad, George, who had been chatting with neighbors near the patio bar, set his beer glass down so hard the foam spilled over the rim. He hurried over, his face lined with confusion.

“Grace, what’s going on?” George asked, looking between me, my stepmother, and Daniel. “What are you screaming about?”

Margaret was sobbing now. She clutched her damp beach towel tightly against her chest, stepping backward toward the pool ladder. “Grace, please... not here. Not in front of everyone. It’s a medical matter—”

“A MEDICAL MATTER?!” I roared, stepping deeper into the water and grabbing the edge of Margaret’s towel, yanking it aside before she could pull away.

The crowd gasped in collective horror.

It wasn't just the transplanted tattoo. Surrounding the compass mark was a long, jagged surgical scar running from her lower ribs up toward her sternum—fresh, pink, and obviously from a major, recent operation.

“That is my husband’s tattoo!” I screamed, my voice shaking with rage and confusion. “That is Daniel’s skin on your body, Margaret! Daniel, get over here RIGHT NOW!”

Daniel didn't move. He took a single step back, as if he wanted to run, but my father stepped into his path, blocking him.

George looked down at his wife’s exposed side, then looked at Daniel. George’s brow furrowed in utter bewilderment. “Daniel... why does my wife have a piece of your body on her chest? What did you two do?!”

Daniel closed his eyes, swallowed hard, and finally spoke. His voice was cold, flat, and completely devoid of hope.

“She was dying, George,” Daniel whispered, his voice echoing across the silent backyard. “And if I didn't give her what she needed... she was going to take everything else from us.”
