Chapter 4 - The Confession in the Dark

The room seemed to tilt beneath my feet. I grabbed the back of the dining chair to steady myself.

“An affair...” I whispered, looking at Margaret. “With Daniel’s father?”

“She wasn't just his affair,” Daniel continued, his voice cold and precise. “They had a child together—a child she gave up for adoption in secret before she ever met your father, George. But more importantly, because of that history, when Margaret needed a tissue donor, she ran genetic screenings across every database she could buy access to.”

Daniel pulled out his phone, unlocked it, and tossed it onto the coffee table in front of us.

“She found out that my father’s genetic lineage carried a rare leukocyte antigen match—the exact, hyper-specific match her body needed to survive,” Daniel said. “My father died five years ago. So she came after the only direct genetic descendant left.”

“You,” I gasped. “She came after you.”

“She didn't just ask me, Grace,” Daniel sneered, turning his glare toward Margaret. “She blackmailed me.”

George stood towering over his wife, his fists clenched at his sides. “You blackmailed my daughter’s husband?! With what, Margaret?! WHAT COULD YOU POSSIBLY HAVE ON HIM?!”

Margaret covered her face, weeping hysterically. “I was dying, George! I was going to die in months! The doctors said no public list would find a match in time!”

“She threatened to ruin us, Grace,” Daniel said, his voice cracking with emotion. “She found out that my construction firm was facing a massive, silent audit due to an accounting error my former partner made three years ago. If that audit went public, I was facing criminal fraud charges and bankruptcy. She bought out my firm’s debt through a shell corporation she set up using your father’s family trust funds!”

George turned pale. “My family trust? The money my parents left for Grace and Lily?!”

“Yes!” Daniel shouted. “She told me if I didn't undergo the private donor surgery in Durham—if I didn't sign a non-disclosure agreement and let her surgeon take the necessary fascia and skin tissue from my torso—she would trigger the debt default, send the audit to the federal prosecutors, and destroy my life. I would have gone to prison, Grace! We would have lost the house! We would have lost everything!”

I stared at the man I had slept beside for seven years. The man who had kissed me goodnight every evening while carrying a horrifying, secret scar under his bandages.

“So you let them cut you open?” I whispered, tears blurring my vision. “You let a surgeon strip tissue from your body—including your tattoo—and put it into her? In secret? Without telling your wife?!”

May you like

“I did it to protect you and Lily!” Daniel cried out, reaching toward me. “She promised it would be invisible! Her surgeon promised the graft wouldn't include the tattooed dermal layer, but during the operation, there was a complication—they needed a larger surface area of healthy dermis to cover the vascular site, or the graft would fail! She made them take the tattoo piece because it was the healthiest tissue available!”

“You lied to me every single day!” I screamed, pushing his hands away. “You looked at our daughter, you looked at me, and you kept this sick, twisted secret in our home!”
