Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Hospital Lie

The party evaporated within fifteen minutes.

Neighbors offered awkward condolences, gathering their children and fleeing the driveway in a flurry of car doors slamming and tires crunching on gravel. My close friends took Lily inside to the playroom, keeping her distracted while the adults remained in the living room.

The living room felt like an interrogation chamber.

My father sat on the leather sofa, his head buried in his hands, breathing heavily. Margaret sat in the corner armchair, wrapped tightly in a dry bathrobe, her eyes swollen from crying. I stood in the center of the room, pacing like a caged animal, while Daniel stood near the front door, his arms crossed, staring at the floorboards.

“Start talking,” I commanded, looking at Daniel. “Every single word. If you lie to me once, I’m taking Lily and calling the police.”

Daniel looked up, his eyes bloodshot. “Calling the police won't change what happened, Grace. Because what we did... it wasn't illegal. It was a secret medical procedure.”

“A secret procedure?!” I yelled. “You spent the last six months guarding your phone, sneaking off to Durham, telling me you were working late on job sites! You told me you had a minor hernia repair three months ago when you came home with bandages on your ribs!”

“I lied,” Daniel admitted softly, tears finally spilling over his lashes. “It wasn't a hernia repair. I had a partial tissue graft and organ donation consultation at a private surgical clinic in Durham.”

George snapped his head up, his face red with sudden fury. “Organ donation?! Margaret, what is he talking about? You told me you were going to Durham for physical therapy for your sciatica!”

Margaret shrank into her bathrobe, refusing to meet her husband’s eyes.

“Eight months ago,” Daniel began, his voice steadying as he accepted his fate, “Margaret contacted me directly. She showed up at my construction office in downtown Raleigh. She brought a stack of medical files.”

“Medical files for what?” I demanded.

“She was diagnosed with a rare form of aggressive tissue necrosis complicated by an autoimmune reaction,” Daniel explained. “Her lower thoracic wall was failing. Her body was rejecting her own tissue. The doctors told her she had less than a year unless she found a genetically compatible donor for a complex skin and structural fascia graft.”

I blinked, processing his words. “A donor? Why would you be a donor, Daniel? You’re her stepdaughter’s husband! You aren't related to her by blood!”

Daniel looked at Margaret, his jaw tightening in deep resentment.

“That’s what I thought too, Grace,” Daniel said softly. “Until Margaret handed me the DNA results she kept hidden for thirty years.”

The room went completely, terrifyingly still.

George slowly stood up from the sofa. “What DNA results?” George asked, his voice shaking. “Margaret... what DNA results?”

Daniel took a deep breath and looked directly into my eyes.

“Margaret isn't just your stepmother, Grace,” Daniel revealed, delivering a strike that shattered my entire world into a thousand pieces. “And she isn't a stranger to my family either. Twenty-six years ago, before my parents moved to North Carolina... Margaret had an affair with my father.”
