Chapter 7 - The Hidden Twin

We left the Durham clinic with more questions than answers, driving ten miles north to the Oakridge Memory & Neurological Care Facility—a high-end residential center nestled among the Carolina pines.

This was where Daniel’s mother had been living for a decade.

We walked down a quiet, carpeted hallway lined with soft lighting and watercolor paintings. The air smelled of clean linen and fresh flowers.

A nurse guided us to a sunny courtyard at the back of the facility. Sitting in a wheelchair near a rose garden was an elderly woman with silver hair pulled back in a neat bun. She wore a soft lavender cardigan, staring peacefully at the flowers.

This was Evelyn Mercer.

As we approached, Evelyn turned her head. Her eyes, cloudy with age and illness, adjusted slowly before locking onto my face.

“Daniel...?” she whispered, her voice frail as paper. “Is that you, Daniel...?”

“No, Evelyn,” I said gently, kneeling beside her wheelchair. “I’m Grace. I’m Daniel’s wife.”

Evelyn’s pale hands twitched in her lap. A faint, knowing smile touched her lips. “Grace... yes. Daniel spoke about you. Before the shadows took my mind... he told me he found a good girl.”

George stepped beside me, his face pale as he looked down at the woman his wife had conspired with for decades. “Evelyn... do you remember me? I’m George Redmond. Margaret’s husband.”

At the mention of Margaret’s name, Evelyn’s peaceful expression vanished. Her shoulders went stiff.

“Margaret...” Evelyn muttered, her breath coming faster. “The thief... the woman who took my sister’s life...”

My head snapped up. “Your sister? Evelyn... what do you mean, your sister?”

Evelyn reached out, her thin fingers clutching my coat sleeve with surprising strength.

“Margaret... wasn't just my colleague, Grace,” Evelyn whispered, her eyes wide with a terrifying clarity that broke through her neurological fog. “Margaret had a twin sister. A twin sister named Eleanor... who died thirty years ago in a medical facility in Atlanta.”

George stumbled back, grabbing a wooden bench for support. “A twin sister?! Margaret never told me she had a sister!”

“Because Margaret killed her career,” Evelyn said, her voice shaking with long-buried grief. “Margaret stole Eleanor’s identity, Eleanor’s medical research, and Eleanor’s marriage records. The woman you married, George... the woman who lives in your house... isn't named Margaret.”

Evelyn pulled me closer, her breath warm against my ear as she delivered the ultimate truth behind the nightmare.

“Her real name is Victoria,” Evelyn whispered. “And she has been living as her dead twin sister for thirty years.”
