Chapter 2 - The Echo of Recognition

Julian Thorne did not watch her leave; he watched the space where she had just stood, the air still vibrating with the ghost of her performance. The laughter that had filled the ballroom seconds ago felt like a stain on his conscience. He moved through the crowd, his stride purposeful, ignoring the socialites who attempted to intercept him.

He caught up to her in the dimly lit servant’s corridor, just as she was pulling on a worn coat over her uniform.

"You didn't bow," he said, his voice low, commanding the narrow hallway.

Isabella flinched, then stood straight. She didn't turn around immediately. She took a breath, shielding her eyes with a facade of indifference. "Maids don't bow to the guests, Mr. Thorne. They serve them."

"That wasn't a maid’s dance," he countered, stepping closer. The smell of his expensive scotch was faint, but his presence was suffocatingly real. "That was the Grand Jeté of a prodigy. I saw you in Vienna, ten years ago. You were Isabella Rossi then. Why the name change? Why are you holding a tray instead of a center stage?"

Isabella turned. Her eyes were hard, tempered by a decade of hardship. "Isabella Rossi died in a hospital bed a long time ago, Mr. Thorne. This woman just needs to pay her rent."

"You were the best I’d ever seen," he insisted, his composure slipping. "I tracked your career for months before you vanished. What happened?"

"Life happened," she snapped, clutching the $7,000 in her pocket. "It's a tragedy, isn't it? A billionaire's favorite hobby—collecting stories. Well, you have your story. Now, please, let me go."
