Chapter 5 - A Different Kind of Debt

The applause was deafening, but it didn't matter. As Isabella walked off-stage, her body aching but her heart light, the reality of her life hit her. She was no longer a maid. She was no longer a debtor.

Julian was waiting in the wings. He reached out, not to touch her, but to steady her.

"They loved you," he whispered.

"I didn't do it for them," she replied, her voice trembling.

"I know."

The paparazzi swarmed as they exited. The questions were aggressive, piercing the night air. "Isabella, is it true you were a former prodigy? Julian, are you protecting a secret?"

Julian stopped. He took her hand—not in a gesture of ownership, but of partnership. He looked at the cameras, then down at her.

"The secret," he told the press, his voice clear and resonant, "is that I spent ten years looking for a ghost, only to realize I was the one who was blind. She wasn't hiding from the world; the world simply wasn't worthy of her."

Isabella looked at the man who had bought her dance, only to give her back her life. She realized then that the $7,000 hadn't been the price of a show—it had been the price of admission to a new beginning.
