Chapter 3 - The Price of Silence

The aftermath of the gala was a storm of whispers. Seraphina, humiliated by the silence that followed Isabella’s performance, turned her vitriol toward Julian. She didn't care about the dancing; she cared that Julian had looked at a servant with more intensity than he had ever shown her.

Julian, however, was obsessed. He spent the next three days digging into legal records and medical reports. He found the truth: the car accident, the crushed vertebrae, the failed surgery, and the family debt that had swallowed her inheritance.

He tracked Isabella to a cramped apartment on the outskirts of the city. He didn't knock; he waited outside until she returned from her shift at the hotel.

"I can fix it," he said, stepping from the shadows of the fire escape.

Isabella didn't scream. She looked exhausted. "Fix what? My spine? My reputation? My bank account?"

"Your career," he said. He pulled an envelope from his jacket. "There is a gala for the National Arts Foundation in two weeks. I am a primary donor. You are going to be my guest. And you are going to dance."

"I am a maid, Julian. Not a puppet."

"You're a woman who has been hiding for a decade," he said, his voice softening. "If you do this, I will clear your family's debts. Every last cent."

Isabella looked at the envelope. It wasn't just a contract; it was a cage, or perhaps, a key.
