Chapter 3 - The Sealed Room Beneath the West Staircase

“Victor!” Adrian shouted over the ringing silence of the hall.
Instantly, the heavy oak doors leading to the service wing burst open. A beam of a tactical flashlight cut through the darkness, illuminating Victor, Adrian’s head of security, flanked by four armed enforcers in tactical gear.
“Boss! Power was sliced at the main transformer outside,” Victor reported crisply, his weapon raised. “Perimeter is breached, but our men are holding the gates.”
“Secure the ballroom. Let no one leave—especially Celeste Vale and anyone associated with Vance,” Adrian ordered, rising smoothly to his feet while scooping Lily into his arms. The little girl buried her face in his neck, safe for the moment. “Vance just tried to take her. He’s running.”
“He’s already gone out the garden terrace, Boss. Slipped out in the panic,” Victor muttered, cursing under his breath. “What do we do?”
“We don't chase ghosts in the dark,” Adrian said, his mind racing. He remembered the warning etched into the hairpin Isabelle had left behind: The truth waits in a sealed room beneath the west staircase. Do not trust the woman in gold.
“Victor, clear the west wing hallway. Bring the heavy crowbar and the master bypass key.”
“Boss, that wing has been sealed since the tragedy eleven years ago. The structural engineers said—”
“I don't give a damn what the engineers said,” Adrian interrupted, his voice cutting through argument like a diamond glass-cutter. “Move.”
Minutes later, the grand, echoing corridors of the west wing were illuminated only by the harsh white beams of tactical flashlights. Dust motes danced in the air like fallen stars. The west staircase—a magnificent spiral of dark mahogany—loomed ahead, its base covered by a heavy, ornate wooden wainscoting that hadn't been touched in over a decade.
Lily carried her blue rabbit in one hand, her other tiny hand holding tightly to Adrian’s thumb as he walked.
“Is this where Mama lived?” she whispered, her big amber eyes wide as she looked at the shadowed portraits lining the walls—ancestors of the Sterling family looking down with stern, unblinking gazes.
“Yes, sweet girl,” Adrian replied softly, his heart aching with a mixture of grief and boiling rage. “This is where she grew up. And tonight, we’re going to find out why they tried to erase her.”
Victor knelt at the base of the wainscoting. With a heavy industrial crowbar, he jammed the steel tip into the seam of the wood. With a deafening groan of ancient nails and splintering oak, the secret panel popped open, revealing a dark, descending stairwell plunging deep into the stone foundations of the mansion.
A gust of cold, stagnant air rushed up from the depths, carrying the faint scent of old paper, dust, and dried lavender.

The exact scent Isabelle used to wear.
“Stay behind me,” Adrian instructed Victor and the enforcers. He pulled a spare flashlight from his belt, flicked it on, and stepped down into the dark unknown, carrying his niece into the heart of his family’s darkest secret.
