Chapter 5 - Escaping the Gala

Deep beneath the mansion, the air grew damp and cold.
Adrian’s flashlight cut through the darkness, illuminating a subterranean chamber that appeared to be part of the estate’s original 19th-century foundation. Stone walls lined with iron brackets, old wine racks, and dusty crates stretched into the gloom.
At the far end of the chamber stood a heavy iron-reinforced door, secured with an antiquated digital keypad and a massive mechanical deadbolt.
“This is it,” Adrian breathed, stepping up to the door.
He pulled the tiny steel key from his pocket—the one hidden inside the silver hairpin. With trembling fingers, he slid it into the concealed keyhole beneath the keypad. At the same time, he punched in Isabelle’s birthday—a sequence burned into his memory since childhood.
Click.
The heavy deadbolt turned with a satisfying, mechanical snap. The digital screen flashed green, and the iron door slowly swung inward, groaning on hinges that hadn't moved in eleven years.
Adrian raised his flashlight and stepped inside.
The beam swept across a room that looked like a cross between a high-tech communications bunker and a personal sanctuary. Rows of computer servers hummed quietly, their green lights blinking in the dark. A single mahogany desk sat in the center of the room, covered in thick layers of dust. On top of it sat an old reel-to-reel tape recorder, a stack of legal ledgers, and a framed photograph of a younger Isabelle smiling brightly, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a red blanket.
Lily gasped. “Mama!”
She broke free from Adrian’s hand and ran to the desk, her small fingers lightly touching the glass of the photograph.
“She’s so pretty,” Lily whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. “Just like in my dreams.”
Adrian walked over to the desk, his chest tightening. He picked up the reel-to-reel tape recorder. Next to it was a handwritten note in Isabelle’s unmistakable cursive: If you are listening to this, Adrian, it means they finally came for me. Trust no one in gold. Vance and Celeste are selling our legacy to the highest bidder.
With shaking hands, Adrian pressed the ‘Play’ button on the vintage machine.
The magnetic tape hissed softly, and then, Isabelle’s voice—clear, brave, and heartbreakingly familiar—filled the underground room.
“Adrian... if you’re hearing this, I’m either gone or hiding in plain sight. On the night of the yacht explosion, I didn't die. I watched them switch the logs. Celeste Vale planted the explosive device in the engine room while Julian Vance forged my signature on the asset transfer. They wanted the Sterling shipping empire, and they were willing to kill our entire family to get it. I faked my death to keep my baby safe. Lily is your blood, Adrian. Protect her. And make them pay.”
The tape clicked off, leaving only the quiet hum of the servers in the silence.
Adrian stood motionless, the fury burning inside him turning into a cold, diamond-hard resolve.
“Victor,” Adrian said quietly, his voice echoing in the bunker.

“Boss?” Victor answered from the doorway.
“Lock down the estate. No one leaves. Notify our allies in the federal prosecutor’s office that we have the complete digital ledger of the Vale-Vance conspiracy.” Adrian knelt down and lifted Lily into his arms once more, kissing the top of her head. “And bring Celeste Vale down here. It’s time she learned what happens when you steal from a Sterling.”
