Chapter 2 - The Red Signal

Three miles away, inside the penthouse office of Vance Global Security, the encrypted desktop terminal flashed a violent, pulsing crimson.

A single word lit up the center of the dark monitor: RED.

My older sister, Mara, looked up from her briefing documents, her sharp, intelligent eyes instantly locking onto the screen. For six months, since Adrian had slowly begun isolating me, cutting off my phone lines, and convincing our mutual acquaintances that I was "fragile and emotional," Mara and I had maintained a silent, unshakeable lifeline. She knew my husband’s charming public facade hid a controlling, abusive tyrant. She also knew that if I ever sent that three-letter emergency code, it meant my life—or my unborn child’s life—was in immediate, mortal danger.

Mara did not hesitate. She didn’t call to ask questions. She didn’t waste a single second.

With a single tap of her finger on the master control console, she activated protocol Vengeance-Prime.

“All units, vector zero-four,” Mara commanded into her encrypted comm-link, her voice dropping into a cold, lethal register that had commanded the respect of international security directors for a decade. “Target location: the suburban residence on Maplewood Lane. Code Red. Medical airlift and tactical enforcement en route. Zero tolerance for interference.”

Across the city, a heavy-duty private medical transport helicopter stationed at a downtown pad lifted off into the gray dawn sky, its rotors beating a furious rhythm against the wind. Simultaneously, two black unmarked tactical SUVs carrying elite private security operatives and federal liaison officers peeled out of a subterranean garage, their sirens silent but their engines roaring with unstoppable momentum.

Mara grabbed her tailored wool coat, pulled her leather gloves over her hands, and walked swiftly toward the private elevator.

“Hold on, little sister,” Mara whispered into the empty air, her jaw tight with a cold, terrifying fury. “You’re about to find out just who you married—and who is coming to collect the debt.”
