Chapter 4 - The Meridian Sanctuary

The helicopter flight to the Meridian Memorial Executive Wing was a blur of flashing monitors, steady oxygen masks, and the quiet, professional murmur of trauma specialists.
By the time the wheels touched down on the rooftop helipad, Dr. Aris Vance—our family’s chief obstetrician and a trusted longtime friend—was waiting with a specialized surgical team.
“We have maternal tachycardia and signs of acute placental distress,” Dr. Aris reported as the gurney was wheeled rapidly through the sliding automatic doors into the sterile, brightly lit delivery suite. “Prep her for emergency C-section immediately.”
I gripped Mara’s hand as the nurses rolled us down the corridor. My vision was swimming at the edges, but the agony of the contractions was slowly being overridden by a strange, profound sense of safety.
“Mara...” I whispered, my voice trembling. “The baby... is she okay?”
“She’s going to be fine,” Mara squeezed my hand back, her eyes shining with unshed tears. “You’re safe now, little sister. Nobody is ever going to hurt you or your daughter again. Focus on breathing.”
The doors to the operating room swung shut.
Outside, Mara stood in the private observation lounge, pulling out her encrypted satellite phone. Her expression hardened back into the ruthless corporate executive and security director she was known as in the boardrooms of New York and Washington.
“Connect me to Chief Legal Counsel Marcus Vance,” she commanded the secure terminal.
Within two seconds, the line connected.
“Director Vance,” Marcus’s voice came through crisp and clear. “I received the priority flag from Maplewood Lane. What’s the status?”
“The baby is in distress; they’re performing an emergency C-section now,” Mara said, pacing across the polished hardwood floor of the lounge. “And Adrian Cole has officially crossed the line into criminal domestic assault, false imprisonment, and reckless endangerment.”
“Understood,” Marcus replied smoothly. “What are your instructions regarding his assets, his employment, and the Maplewood property?”
Mara stopped pacing, looking out the massive floor-to-ceiling windows at the skyline of the city where Adrian’s entire life was built upon a foundation of sand.

“Erase him,” Mara said coldly. “Execute the master trust revocation on the Maplewood estate. Freeze every personal and corporate account in his name. Notify the board of Cole-Taylor Enterprises that their primary financing subsidiary—which happens to be wholly owned by our family’s venture trust—is calling in their entire debt portfolio effective immediately.”
A quiet chuckle came over the speaker. “It will be done by noon, Director. By the time Mr. Cole wakes up tomorrow, he won't even be able to afford a cup of coffee.”
