Chapter 7 - The Emergency C-Section and the Miracle

Back in the executive maternity wing of Meridian Memorial, the sterile white lights of the operating room hummed softly.
Dr. Aris Vance worked with calm, absolute precision. The tension in the room was thick, but beneath it ran a current of profound relief.
“We’re through the uterine wall,” Dr. Aris announced softly. “Preparing for extraction.”
A few seconds later, the sharp, beautiful sound of a newborn baby crying echoed through the operating room.
My eyes flew open, tears spilling over my lashes as the pediatrician gently lifted a tiny, squirming bundle wrapped in a pink thermal blanket.
“Congratulations, Mother,” the pediatrician smiled warmly, bringing the baby over so I could see her tiny face. “She’s breathing on her own, perfect Apgar score. Eight pounds, four ounces of pure strength.”

“My baby...” I sobbed softly, kissing her tiny cheek as the nurses placed her securely against my chest. Her skin was warm, her heart beating with a strong, rapid rhythm. She had survived the cold, the abuse, and the terror. She was here, and she was safe.
Outside the observation window, Mara stood watching with her arms crossed over her chest, a profound, radiant smile breaking across her face for the first time in months. She wiped a stray tear from her cheek, whispering a silent vow to protect this little girl with every breath in her body.
