Chapter 6 - The Eviction of Lenora and Arthur

Back at the suburban estate on Maplewood Lane, the morning frost had melted into cold, gray slush.
Inside the mansion, Lenora and Arthur Cole sat in the formal parlor, furiously dialing their high-society friends on their landline phone—only to find the line completely dead, disconnected by the telecom provider due to non-payment of the master account.
“Useless technology,” Lenora muttered angrily, tossing the handset onto the silk sofa.
She was supposed to host her weekly garden club brunch at noon. Instead, the house was freezing, the gas had been shut off remotely for structural audit, and the smart refrigerator had locked its doors to preserve inventory.
Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed across the marble foyer.
Lenora stood up, smoothing her designer blouse with an indignant huff. “Finally! The repairman is here. Adrian must have sorted out this absurd nonsense at the office.”
She marched out into the foyer, expecting to see her son with an apology and a cup of coffee. Instead, she found two county deputy sheriffs and a representative from Vance Property Management standing inside the front door, which they had unlocked using a master administrative override.
“Mrs. Lenora Cole?” the lead deputy asked, his voice flat and professional.
Lenora crossed her arms, her chin lifting in automatic arrogance. “Yes? What is the meaning of this intrusion? I demand to speak to the homeowner—!”
“You are currently occupying a property under a formal notice of occupancy termination and foreclosure issued by Vance-Vale Holdings,” the property representative interrupted smoothly, holding out a thick stack of legal papers. “You have exactly thirty minutes to vacate the premises and remove your personal belongings. All remaining items will be impounded for storage at your son’s expense.”
Lenora’s face turned a mottled, terrifying shade of purple.
“Vacate?! You insolent pig!” she shrieked, her voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings. “Do you know who I am?! I am the mother of the senior vice president of this company! I selected the wallpaper in this foyer! You cannot throw me out of my own home!”
“It’s not your home, Mrs. Cole,” the deputy said calmly, stepping forward to block her path toward the stairs. “It never was. And your son no longer works for the company.”
Before Lenora could scream another insult, the front doors swung wide open, and four professional movers in matching uniforms marched into the foyer carrying large, heavy-duty cardboard boxes.
“Start packing the guest suite,” the property manager instructed briskly.
For the next thirty minutes, Lenora and Arthur shrieked, cursed, and threatened everyone within earshot while their designer clothes, crystal figurines, and antique porcelain were unceremoniously dumped into cardboard boxes.

By 1:00 PM, Lenora and Arthur Cole—the self-appointed royalty of suburban society—were standing on the snowy curb outside the iron gates, shivering in their fur coats, surrounded by twenty cardboard boxes, waiting for a local taxi that took forty minutes to arrive because no Uber driver would accept a fare with so much luggage.
As the taxi finally pulled away, Lenora looked back at the grand estate one last time, realizing with horrifying clarity that her entire world had just been erased.
