Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

Two days later, night had fallen over the Wyoming estate.
Inside her warm, spacious room, Lena was making steady progress. Her skin had regained a healthy glow, her cuts were healing, and for the first time in two years, her posture was straight and unburdened.
She sat at a small oak desk, holding a needle and a spool of deep blue thread that Jude had personally sourced for her. On a fresh piece of cotton cloth, her trembling fingers were learning to sew again. It was slow work, her fingers stiff from old injuries, but every stitch felt like reclaiming a piece of her stolen soul.
A gentle knock sounded at her door.
Jude entered, carrying two cups of steaming chamomile tea. He set one down beside her embroidery hoop and stood quietly, watching her work.
"You have your grandmother's hands," Jude noted softly.
Lena looked up, a small, genuine smile touching her lips. "I'm rusty. But it feels good to make something beautiful again. In that house... everything was about tearing things down."
"Nothing will ever be torn down again," Jude promised gently.
Before Lena could reply, Macon Sharp knocked briskly and stepped into the room, his expression grave.
"Boss," Macon said sharply. "We have a situation at the perimeter. A young man was caught trying to scale the outer fence. He didn't come armed. He kept screaming your name and saying he had information about Lena."
Lena stood up, her hand instinctively resting on her stomach. "Who is it?"
"He says his name is Curtis Fallon," Macon replied.
Lena’s breath hitched. "Curtis?"
Ten minutes later, in a secure holding room in the basement of the estate, Curtis Fallon sat at a steel table, trembling violently. He looked small, broken, and terrified as two heavily armed guards stood behind him.
The door opened, and Jude stepped inside, followed by Lena.
When Curtis saw Lena, tears burst from his eyes. He buried his face in his hands, his shoulders heaving with ragged sobs.
"Lena..." Curtis choked out. "I'm sorry... I'm so sorry. I should have stopped him. I should have opened that shed door a year ago. I'm a coward... a dirty, useless coward."
Lena looked at her brother-in-law. For two years, Curtis had been a silent witness to her torture. She had felt anger toward him, deep and bitter. But looking at him now—broken by the guilt that had finally eaten through his silence—she saw only a boy who had been trapped in the same abusive nightmare.
"Why are you here, Curtis?" Lena asked softly, standing beside Jude.
Curtis wiped his face with the back of his sleeve, looking up at Jude with terrified reverence.
"Wade has gone crazy," Curtis said, his voice panicked. "He... he contacted Marcus Crane’s old lieutenant—a man named Viktor Vance. Sheriff Dawes set up the meeting. Wade told Vance that Mr. Graves is here, at this estate, and that he has limited men with him."
Jude’s expression didn't change, but the room’s temperature seemed to drop ten degrees. "Go on."
"Wade traded everything," Curtis continued rapidly. "He gave Vance the coordinates of this property, the layout of the access roads, everything he knew. In exchange, Vance promised to bring an armed team, storm this place, kill Mr. Graves, and give Lena back to Wade. They're planning the attack for tonight, during the thunderstorm that's rolling in from the north."
Macon stepped forward, his eyes cold. "Boss, Vance's crew is heavy-duty. Mercenaries, automatic weapons. If they hit us during a mountain storm—"
"They won't get past the gate," Jude interrupted, his voice dropping into a register of supreme, terrifying calm. He turned his eyes back down to Curtis. "Why come here to tell us this? You could have stayed out of it."
Curtis looked up at Lena, his eyes raw with emotion. "Because she saved my life once when I was sick, when Wade and Mom left me in my bed to sweat out a fever. She was the only person in that godforsaken house who had any humanity. I couldn't let Wade kill her baby."
Jude looked at Curtis for a long, silent moment. Then he nodded slowly to Macon.
"Get him cleaned up," Jude ordered. "Give him a warm room, food, and clothes. He stays under our protection."

"Thank you, Mr. Graves," Curtis whispered, collapsing back into his chair in relief.
Jude turned to Lena, taking her hand in his. "It's time to end this, Lena. Tonight, Wade Fallon pays his debt in full."
