Chapter 10 - Wild Columbines in Bloom

Two years later.
The summer sun shone bright and warm over the Wyoming valley, painting the sky in brilliant shades of turquoise and gold.
On the hill overlooking the reconstructed Wynn homestead, a great celebration was taking place. White silk ribbons fluttered in the warm breeze, wrapped around wooden arbors decorated with hundreds of freshly picked wild columbine flowers.
Guests gathered on the green lawn—friends, local allies who had helped rebuild the county, Dr. Evelyn Vance, and Curtis, who stood proudly as the best man.
Down the grassy aisle walked three-year-old Opal. She wore a little white dress, her dark curls bouncing as she carried a small basket of blue flower petals, dropping them onto the grass with delighted giggles. Boone trotted dutifully behind her, wearing a silly black bow tie on his collar, keeping a watchful eye on his little human.
Then, music rose softly into the summer air.
Lena stepped onto the path.
She was breathtaking. Her wedding dress was made of ivory silk, hand-embroidered by her own fingers with delicate blue wild columbines along the train. Her pale green eyes shone like emeralds, radiant with pure, unadulterated happiness.
At the end of the altar stood Jude.
He wore a tailored black tuxedo, his dark hair neatly styled. The cold, dangerous mafia boss who had once commanded fear across the country looked at the woman walking toward him with a tenderness so deep it brought tears to the eyes of everyone present.
When Lena reached him, Jude took both of her hands in his.
The minister spoke warm words of peace, love, and new beginnings, but the true vow took place in the quiet look shared between Jude and Lena.
"Nine years ago, I was lost in the dark," Jude spoke, his voice deep and thick with emotion as he slid a band of polished platinum onto her finger. "You brought me into the light and gave me back my life. I spent nine years looking for you, Lena. And I will spend the rest of my life protecting your joy, loving your soul, and building our home."
Lena tears shone in her eyes as she placed a matching platinum band on his finger, over the scar on his left hand.
"You rescued me when I had lost all hope," Lena whispered softly. "You showed me that love isn't a cage—it's a sanctuary. You are my home, Jude. Yesterday, today, and forever."
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the minister declared with a broad smile. "You may kiss the bride."
Jude didn't hesitate. He pulled Lena into his arms, dipping her slightly as he kissed her deeply under the warm Wyoming sun.
The crowd erupted into joyous cheers and applause. Little Opal ran up, giggling and wrapping her tiny arms around both of her parents' legs, while Boone let out a loud, happy bark that echoed across the valley.
Later that evening, as the sun began to dip below the mountain peaks, turning the sky into a canvas of deep violet and warm gold, the guests danced under glowing lanterns.
Jude and Lena walked hand-in-hand up to the highest crest of the hill, looking down over their sprawling, peaceful home.
The mountain breeze blew gently through Lena’s dark hair, bringing with it the sweet scent of blooming pine and wild flowers.
Jude wrapped his arms around her from behind, pulling her tight against his chest, while little Opal slept peacefully in the house below, guarded by Boone and Curtis.
Lena looked down at her hands, resting over Jude’s arms.
The scars were still there, but they were no longer a reminder of a dog shed or a frozen night. They were proof of the storm they had both survived—and the beautiful life they had built together from the ashes.
"What are you thinking about, my love?" Jude asked gently, kissing the top of her head.
Lena smiled, looking out at the endless field of wild columbines blooming under the twilight sky.
"I'm thinking about what my grandmother said," Lena whispered softly, resting her head back against his chest. "You're planting a seed. May it grow into something good."
May you like
Jude held her closer, his dark eyes looking out into their bright, peaceful future.
"It grew into everything, Lena," Jude whispered. "It grew into everything."
