Chapter 2 - The Ice Age Protocol

The searing agony of the cigarette burn flared across my abdomen, a white-hot brand of betrayal that burned deeper into my soul than my skin. As the acrid stench of scorched flesh filled the kitchen, something inside me didn't break—it hardened into diamond. The tears stopped instantly. The fear evaporated, replaced by a cold, mathematical clarity.

"Get your hands off me," I whispered, my voice sounding like grinding glaciers.

Hunter, emboldened by his father's vile display, gave me another rough shake. "You’re going to apologize to Dad right now, you ungrateful—"

Before he could finish, I thrust my heel backward with every ounce of my remaining strength, catching him squarely in the shin. Hunter howled, stumbling back and releasing his grip. I didn't waste a millisecond. I bolted down the hallway, slamming and deadbolting the master suite door behind me before they could recover.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, and I pressed a trembling hand to my belly, whispering frantic apologies to my baby. I'm sorry, little one. Mommy's got you. They will never touch us again.

Throwing open my walk-in closet, I bypassed the clothes and reached into the hidden wall safe behind my winter coats. My fingers punched in the biometric override. Inside lay my emergency tablet, completely independent of the household network, and my master financial keys.

As heavy fists pounded on the bedroom door, accompanied by Arthur's booming voice and Carol's shrill shrieks demanding I open up, I sat at my vanity and opened the administrative dashboard of my life.

With surgical precision, I initiated Protocol Zero—the financial and digital doomsday device I had quietly coded into our automated estate systems months ago, just in case my nagging doubts ever proved true.

First, I severed all joint access. Every single checking, savings, and investment account linked to Hunter was instantly frozen, stripped of authorization, and transferred into a newly created trust bearing my maiden name. His personal credit cards, funded entirely by my secondary limits, were canceled simultaneously with a single click.

Second, I locked down the condo's smart infrastructure. As VP of Sales at a leading tech firm, I had designed and automated every smart device in this million-dollar high-rise. With a few rapid commands, I revoked all facial recognition, pin codes, and digital key privileges for Hunter, Arthur, Carol, and Madison.

Third, I disabled the climate control, cut off the electricity to the living and dining quarters, and shut off the main water valve to the guest wing.

"Lauren! Open this door right now!" Hunter screamed, rattling the heavy oak handle. "My friends are coming over for dessert later! What did you do to the lights? The thermostat just went offline!"

From the hallway, Arthur laughed drunkenly. "Let her starve in the dark, son. Women like her need to be put in their place. Teach her a lesson she'll never forget!"

I looked at the tablet screen. At exactly 8:47 PM, the system confirmation flashed green: All accounts locked. Household utilities restricted. Total asset forfeiture complete.

They thought they were the masters of this domain. They had no idea they were prisoners in a freezing, dark cage of their own making, holding zero dollars and zero power.
