Chapter 5 - Desperation and Delusions

By Friday morning, the legal shockwave had fully hit.

I sat in the sleek corner office of my divorce attorney, Victoria Sterling—a legendary shark known for destroying unfaithful, abusive, and financially predatory spouses. Across the polished mahogany desk sat my medical report, confirming my baby was healthy despite the trauma, alongside a complete financial forensic audit of my marriage.

"My god, Lauren," Victoria whispered, reviewing the ledger. "Over the past three years, Hunter funneled over three hundred thousand dollars of your corporate earnings into secret accounts for his parents, bought his sister a luxury car, and financed their lavish vacations—all while gaslighting you into thinking you were the burden."

"Not anymore," I said, sipping my black coffee. "I want every single dime recovered. I want his assets seized, his car repossessed, and a permanent restraining order that keeps him and his family within five hundred yards of me at all times."

"Done," Victoria smiled sharkishly. "And regarding the custody of your unborn child, their violent behavior captured on your smart-home security cameras gives us absolute leverage. They will never get unsupervised visitation."

Meanwhile, outside my office building, absolute chaos was unfolding.

Hunter, having been bailed out by a distant relative who quickly regretted it, was standing on the public sidewalk with his mother and sister, looking like drowned rats. Their credit cards were still frozen, their cell phones had been disconnected for non-payment, and Hunter's car had already been repossessed by my legal team at dawn.

Desperate, Hunter spotted me walking out of the building flanked by two private security guards hired by Victoria.

"Lauren! Lauren, wait!" Hunter screamed, sprinting across the pavement looking disheveled and frantic. He hadn't shaved, his designer jacket was rumpled, and the arrogant swagger he usually wore was entirely gone.

The security guards stepped forward, blocking him instantly, but Hunter dropped to his knees right there on the busy Chicago sidewalk, playing the pathetic victim for the passing crowd.

"Please, Lauren! Don't do this! I was just stressed! Dad forced me to hold you, you know how he is! We're a family!" Hunter wailed, tears genuinely spilling from his eyes as reality finally crushed his fragile ego.

I stopped, looking down at the man who had held me while his father burned me. There was no pity in my heart, only profound disgust.

"You made your choice, Hunter," I said, my voice cutting through the city noise. "You traded your wife and your child for your father's approval. Now enjoy the consequences."

"You can't divorce me! You'll ruin me!" he cried, grabbing at the hem of my coat before security yanked him away.

"I'm not ruining you, Hunter," I replied coldly. "I'm simply stopping funding you. Welcome to the real world."
