Chapter 3 - Darkness Falls on the Feast

Out in the open-concept living and dining area, the celebratory atmosphere evaporated faster than morning mist under a scorching sun.

One second, the massive Thanksgiving turkey sat center-stage amid crystal glassware and glittering chandeliers; the next, the recessed lighting flickered, groaned, and plunged the entire condo into pitch blackness.

"What the hell?" Arthur barked, stumbling against the dining table and spilling gravy across the pristine white tablecloth. "Hunter! Fix the damn breaker! Who's paying the electric bill around here—oh, wait, she is."

Carol shrieked, clutching her pearl necklace as the ambient temperature plummeted. Without the central heating running, the bitter Chicago November wind howling against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows immediately began to chill the air.

"Hunter, go make your wife open the door," Carol snapped, shivering as she wrapped her designer cardigan tightly around her shoulders. "It's freezing in here, and my phone says there's no Wi-Fi. How am I supposed to post my holiday photos?"

Hunter marched down the hallway, banging furiously on the master bedroom door. "Lauren! Cut the crap! Turn the power back on right now! My dad wants to watch the game, and my phone won't charge. Open up!"

Inside the master suite, I sat peacefully on the king-sized bed, packing an overnight bag with my essential documents, medical records, and comfortable clothes. I ignored his shouting entirely. Through the smart-home intercom system, I monitored their every move and listened to their mounting panic.

"Hunter, did you pay the electric bill?" Madison whined, checking her phone screen. "Mine says 'Service Suspended' on the carrier app. Wait... my mobile data isn't working either."

"Of course I paid it!" Hunter lied, his voice cracking with sudden anxiety. He pulled out his own phone and tried to open his banking app. A red warning banner flashed across his screen: Account Restricted. Contact Administrator.

"That's weird," Hunter muttered, dialing his debit card's customer service line. After a tense minute listening to an automated message, his face drained of all color. "Dad... Carol... my card just got declined. It says the account has been frozen by the primary holder."

Arthur scoffed, stepping into the hallway. "Nonsense. She's just playing games. Give me your phone." Arthur snatched the device, listening intently before slamming it down on the kitchen island. "Some automated glitch! Call her out here right now so I can give her another piece of my mind!"

"You're welcome to try," I said softly, stepping out of the master suite.

I had already dressed in a sleek cashmere coat, my overnight bag slung over my shoulder. I looked radiant, untouchable, and utterly devoid of the fear they had expected to see.

Hunter recoiled slightly, stammering, "L-Lauren? Look, let's not blow things out of proportion. Dad was just... he had a few drinks, it was a joke—"

"A joke," I repeated, my voice dripping with ice. "Burning a pregnant woman with a cigarette. Let's see how funny you find the real world."

"You think you're smart, don't you, you ungrateful gold-digger?" Arthur snarled, stepping forward with his chest puffed out. "You live under my son's roof—"

May you like

"This roof belongs to me," I interrupted, pulling a certified deed copy from my bag and tossing it onto the dining table. "And as of right now, all four of you are officially trespassing on my private property."

Before they could process my words, the front elevator chime dinged. Two uniformed Chicago police officers stepped out into the foyer, summoned by the emergency silent panic alert I had quietly triggered through my security app.
