Chapter 6 - The Courtroom Reckoning

Three months later, the courtroom of the Cook County Superior Court was packed to capacity for the final dissolution hearings.
Arthur and Carol sat at the defense table looking ten years older. Arthur had lost his arrogant posture, facing multiple criminal charges including domestic battery, assault, and elder-adjacent fraud schemes involving misappropriated funds. Hunter sat between them, hollow-eyed and broken, wearing a cheap off-the-rack suit he could barely afford.
Judge Thomas, a formidable jurist with zero tolerance for domestic abuse or financial predation, adjusted his glasses and reviewed the mountain of digital evidence submitted by Victoria Sterling.
"The court has reviewed the complete financial audits, the smart-home security footage of the horrific incident on Thanksgiving night, and the medical documentation," Judge Thomas announced, his deep voice echoing through the silent courtroom.
Hunter buried his face in his hands.
"The marriage is dissolved immediately on grounds of extreme cruelty and financial abuse," Judge Thomas ruled firmly. "Furthermore, sole legal and physical custody of the unborn child—now nearing full term—is granted exclusively to the petitioner, Lauren Vance. The respondent, Hunter Vance, is granted supervised visitation only upon psychiatric evaluation and court approval."
Arthur started to stand up to protest, but the bailiff immediately stepped closer.
"Silence in the court!" Judge Thomas barked. "As for financial restitution, the court finds that the respondent and his extended family unlawfully misappropriated $384,500 of the petitioner's independent earnings. All remaining assets in the respondent's name are hereby seized to satisfy partial repayment. Furthermore, the respondent is ordered to pay monthly restitution and receives zero spousal support, given his proven capacity for employment and his egregious misconduct."

Carol let out a loud, pathetic sob, realizing that her golden goose had not only flown away, but had completely demolished their entire lifestyle. They were bankrupt, facing criminal records, and utterly humiliated.
As I walked out of the courtroom on Victoria's arm, I felt a gentle kick from inside my belly. The nightmare was over. The scars on my skin were fading into silver lines, serving as permanent reminders of my strength rather than my pain.
