Chapter 5 - The Closing Room Sting

At 10:50 AM, inside a glass-walled conference room on the fifth floor of a financial building downtown, Brandon, Gertrude, and Hailey sat anxiously around a polished oak table.
Sitting across from them was Victor Thorne, a slick man in a tailored suit, alongside his private notary.
"Are you certain the title is clean, Brandon?" Thorne asked, tapping his pen against the loan documents. "My underwriters flagged an emergency pause on the digital filing an hour ago."
"It's just a technical glitch!" Gertrude interjected smoothly, leaning forward with an artificial smile. "My daughter-in-law is currently out of town on business and had a minor banking dispute. She authorized me personally to finalize the hard-copy closing. Here is her signed power of attorney."
Gertrude slid a paper across the table. It bore my forged signature and a fake notary stamp.
Thorne picked up the document, examining it closely. "I see. And you're prepared to accept the wire transfer into the Miller Family Trust account today?"
"Yes! Right now!" Brandon said eagerly, sweating through his dress shirt. "We'll take the cashier's check immediately."
The door to the conference room swung open.
Brandon jumped, expecting a secretary with coffee. Instead, two detectives from the San Bernardino Financial Crimes Unit walked in, followed by Evelyn Vance and me.
Gertrude's smile instantly disintegrated. She slammed her hand down on the table. "What is the meaning of this?! Charlotte, how dare you follow us here!"
"Sit down, Mrs. Miller," Detective Ramirez commanded, pulling out his badge. "Mr. Thorne, step away from the desk."
Victor Thorne immediately threw his hands up. "Officers, I'm just the lender here. I have nothing to do with their documentation."
"Which is why you're going to tell us where you got that notary stamp, Mr. Thorne," Detective Ramirez said coldly.
Detective Vance picked up the forged power of attorney from the table and bagged it in a plastic evidence folder.
"Brandon Miller, Gertrude Miller," Detective Ramirez announced, pulling two sets of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for grand theft, felony identity fraud, forgery, and financial criminal conspiracy."
"No! You can't arrest us!" Hailey screamed, backing into the corner. "It was all my mother's idea! She's the one who made the fake documents!"
"Hailey, shut your mouth!" Gertrude yelled, her face turning purple as an officer grabbed her wrists and pinned them behind her back. "Charlotte, tell them to stop! We're family! You can't do this to Brandon!"
I walked up to the edge of the table, looking down at Brandon as the handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. He was crying now, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks.

"Please, Charlotte..." Brandon sobbed, bowing his head. "I was just trying to help my mother. I love you. Think about Skylar!"
"I am thinking about Skylar," I said softly, my voice filled with unyielding authority. "That's why I'm making sure you and your family never come near her again."
