Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The fallout from the arrests was swift and ruthless.
Within forty-eight hours, the local news picked up the story of the suburban identity fraud ring. News cameras captured footage of Gertrude Miller in an orange jumpsuit being led into the county courthouse, shielding her face from the reporters she had once bragged to about her high-society lifestyle.
With the evidence compiled by Marcus and Evelyn, the district attorney filed a bulletproof indictment.
Because Gertrude had a prior record of bankruptcy fraud in another state that Brandon had helped conceal, the judge set bail at $500,000 each. None of them could afford a single dollar without access to my money.
While they sat in county jail awaiting trial, I executed the final phase of my plan.
Evelyn filed for an expedited divorce decree on the grounds of felony fraud and emotional abuse. Under state law, because Brandon had committed grand larceny against my pre-marital estate, the judge granted a complete forfeiture of any marital claim he had. I was awarded 100% sole legal and physical custody of Skylar, with a permanent restraining order protecting us both.
Next came the house.
I hired a crew of professional haulers to completely clear out every single piece of furniture, clothing, and personal effect that belonged to Brandon, Gertrude, and Hailey. I donated their designer clothes—bought with my stolen credit lines—to a local women's shelter, and had the rest of their belongings stored in a commercial unit, paying for one month before mailing the key to Brandon's public defender.
By Friday afternoon, the home was completely cleansed of their presence.
When Skylar walked back through the front door that evening, the smell of stale food and tension was gone. Fresh flowers sat on the kitchen counter, and the aroma of homemade vanilla pasta sauce filled the air.
Skylar looked around the bright, clean living room, her eyes wide. "Mom... are they really gone?"
May you like
I knelt down, wrapping my arms around her shoulders. "They are gone forever, sweetie. Nobody is ever going to tell you what you can eat, where you can sit, or how much you're worth ever again."
Skylar buried her head in my neck, holding onto me tightly as tears of relief finally washed away years of fear.
