Chapter 8 - A Taste of Freedom

Two years later.

The afternoon sun streamed through the large bay windows of our newly renovated kitchen. The old, dark cabinets had been replaced with crisp white quartz, and the room was filled with music, laughter, and the mouth-watering scent of garlic butter and grilled seafood.

It was Skylar’s thirteenth birthday.

Around the long dining table sat Skylar’s real family: my sister, my close friends, Evelyn, and several of Skylar’s middle school classmates. In the center of the table was a massive feast—snow crab legs, jumbo shrimp, fresh sushi rolls, and sparkling apple cider.

Skylar sat at the head of the table, wearing a silver birthday crown, laughing heartily as her friends told jokes.

I walked over, setting down a platter of hot buttered biscuits, and rested my hand gently on her shoulder.

"Having fun, birthday girl?" I asked with a smile.

Skylar looked up at me, her eyes shining with pure joy and love. "This is the best birthday ever, Mom. Thank you."

"You deserve the best of everything, Skylar," I said softly, kissing the top of her head. "Always remember that."

After the party ended and the guests waved goodbye, Skylar went upstairs to try out her new art supplies. I poured myself a glass of iced tea and walked out onto the back patio, leaning against the wooden railing.

My life had transformed completely over the past two years. After shedding the toxic weight of Brandon and his family, my career had flourished. I was promoted to Senior Vice President of Operations at my firm, my credit was fully restored, and my home was a sanctuary of peace, safety, and abundance.

I pulled out my phone and glanced at an old news archive photograph of the night I sat in that small diner with Skylar, watching my phone buzz with frantic calls from Brandon.

That night, I thought I was just protecting my bank account. But in truth, I had saved our lives. I had shown my daughter that a woman never has to sit quietly at a table where she isn't respected, and that no matter how dark the storm gets, standing up for truth and justice will always lead you home.

I closed the phone, took a sip of my iced tea, and looked up at the golden sunset painted across the sky, feeling the sweet, unshakeable taste of freedom.
